Sony has announced new updates for Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for its Xperia P, U, Go and Sola Android phones.

The Ice Cream Sandwich firmware includes improvements to: stability, WiFi, tethering/portable hotspot, camera (capture and playback), NFC and Messaging

It’s not clear precisely which version of Android 4.0 will be released. From information on Sony’s update pages, it appears the build number of the new software is 6.1.1.B.1.54.

As with most software updates, availability will vary by carrier and region. It looks like Sony has announced the updates and released them for the carrier-free versions of the devices, but may not have submitted the update to local carriers yet.

While Australian carriers don’t have any mention of these updates on their sites, Vodafone’s November 29 updates list a “4.0.4 maintenance release” for the Sola which has completed testing and is now undergoing review. It seems unlikely that this is the update Sony has just revealed.

Sony recently announced that none of its 2011 devices will receive an update to Android 4.1 (or 4.2) Jelly Bean, and is expected to announce the update schedule for its 2012 devices in mid-December.

Just had my ST25i Xperia U officially updated.

ICS 4.0.4 with Build 6.1.1.B.1.10. So much smoother than Gingerbread. Noticed by default the trademark themed live wallpapers are disabled now every time you switch themes. But they’re an option in the live wallpaper settings.

Hi is your phone telstra branded?

        No, mine’s international stock.

The new FW is 6.1.1.B.1.54. 6.1.1.B.1.10 was the original (buggy) ICS release. Try to run update again and see if the new 6.1.1.B.1.54 is available to you. I got it on my Sola (again, international stock) and it is better, still not perfect.
