Action Launcher

Aussie developer Chris Lacy has today released version 1.6 of his successful launcher replacement, Action Launcher to the Google Play store. The latest update concentrates on improvements to the the app drawer adding a clean, fresh look as well as new capabilities which now allows you to drag app shortcuts and widgets from the app drawer to your homescreen a function that was previously only possible by a long press of your home screen.

Soon after the release Chris also responded quite quickly to user feedback on the new app drawer – which was made transparent in the 1.6 update – by releasing a 1.6.1 update which allow users to go into settings and choose the option of a tinted look to be added to the app drawer.

This most recent addition to Action Launcher, in addition to the existing covers and recently added shutters function, shows that Chris is adding some very interesting and useful functions to the replacement Android Launcher. After using a variety of launcher replacements I am extremely happy with Action Launcher and even at a cost of $3.99, I can’t think of a good reason why anyone would stick with a stock launcher over this.

Chris has released a video to show off the new features, make sure you check out the Ausdroid cameo :

The action bar is stupid, I’d rather a gesture to open the settings or a icon in the drawer linked to the settings, I don’t need a Google Play shortcut since I rarely open it (only when I get notification of updates that don’t do it automatically) and a search icon that I slide up from the navigation bar home button. Now they want to make the screen look shit with a bright reverse-upside down ‘L’ – http://i.imgur.com/2gy8oGt.jpg – looks like Google has told Chris to change it.

This launcher is great, but I can’t see myself taking advantage of it’s functionality.
