LG-Optimus-GJ-waterproof-official-2

First it was IR Blasters but now it seems that ruggedising your phone is the next battlefield. LG have annonced the LG Optimus GJ, what seems to be a ruggedised version of the LG Optimus G which we reviewed favourably earlier this year.

The Optimus GJ, which is slightly larger and thicker than its brother the Optimus G and carries both IPX7 and IPX5 certification. IPX7 certification means it can stay immersed in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes, while IPX5 relates to protection from dust particles.  Everyone loves a good waterproof test and we can’t wait to see something similar on this one.

Feature wise, the Optimus GJ has a 4.7 inch IPS HD display, Bluetooth 4.0, 13MP rear camera, quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 2GB of RAM.  Where it differs from the original Optimus G is that it has a slightly larger battery – 2,280 mAh versus 2100mAh- and only has 16GB internal memory although to offset this, LG have opted to include a microSD slot.

The Optimus GJ has only been announced for the Taiwanese market in black and black/red variants where it will retail for US $600 but with an LG event scheduled for May 30 in Macau, the Optimus GJ could make an appearance down under.

With so many ruggedised phones beginning to appear on the market, is this something you look for in your handsets? Would you prefer a sturdier build than water/dustproofing?

Now I am no engineer, but I would think that water proof phone would be better off without an SD slot…

Nice one! I’ve actually just order the LG Optimus G off ebay just under half an hour ago so I did have a bit of internal discussion on whether to hold off to get this or take the plunge and get the current model. But then I thought “bugger it, I can’t wait” and ordered the current model.

Beside having to say that, my current phone has a micro SD slot and I don’t use it much.
