Google cuts price of 3D-Mapping Tango tablet in half – promises international availability coming soon

Project Tango White
Google has been slowly moving on their developer focused, 3D mapping ‘Tango’ tablet since announcing it back in June last year. The tablet appeared on Google Play last year, but an invite was still required to buy the tablet, and still is, but maybe not for much longer.

According to Android Police, a number of Twitter users are reporting that the US$1024 tablet has had its price cut in half to just US$512 – still going with that binary based pricing scheme. The other news is that the tablet may be coming to international customers soon.

The pricing is still a little more, with shipping and US local taxes also having to be factored in, so expect the tablet to be still rather expensive by the time it makes it outside the US. But it’s a pretty fully featured tablet, with a FullHD screen, 4GB RAM and enough sensors and cameras to satisfy the biggest spec junkie:

  • 7.02” 1920×1200
HD IPS display (323 ppi) with Scratch-resistant Corning® glass
  • NVIDIA Tegra K1 with 192 CUDA cores
  • 4GB RAM
  • 128GB internal storage with MicroSD Card slot
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz) WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC
  • 1 MP front facing, fixed focus with IR LED and 4 MP 2µm RGB-IR pixel sensor
  • USB 3.0 host via dock connector and Nano SIM slot
  • Dual stereo speakers and 3.5 mm audio connector
  • Sensors:
    • Motion tracking camera
    • 3D depth sensing
    • Accelerometer
    • Ambient light
    • Barometer
    • Compass
    • GPS
    • Gyroscope
  • 119.77×196.33×15.36mm @ 370grams
  • Android 4.4.2 (KitKat)
  • 4960 mAH cell (2 x 2480 cells)

The tablet can be requested by developers through the Project Tango website, or if you’re more consumer oriented, LG will apparently be bringing a tablet with Tango technology to market this year.
