Moto G5 Plus prototype up for sale, full specs and images in tow

It seems that the leaked renders of a 2017 Moto X may have in fact been the Moto G5 Plus. According to an individual selling an almost identical device online in Romania, they claim to be in possession of a prototype Moto G5 Plus, and the images do look rather convincing. The tell-take marks in the top left and right corners of the device indicate that the device is almost certainly an official Motorola sample.

If this Romanian guy does indeed have a Moto G5 Plus up for sale then we can expect him to have some rather quick reprisals from Moto, I can’t imagine the there are a lot of these in the wild. The seller lists the specs as:

  • 5.5″ 1080p Full HD display
  • Octa-core Snapdragon 625 with Adreno 506
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32 GB storage
  • 13 MP rear camera
  • 5 MP cameras front facing camera
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • NFC
  • 3080 mAh battery
  • Micro USB power (very disappointing, even on the G range in 2017)
  • Android 7.0 Nougat

The device definitely looks like Lenovo’s latest range of Moto devices with the large circular camera bump (seriously Lenovo, keep the circle, drop the bump), it’s hard to tell if this is an all metal phone or if it’s metal look plastic or a hybrid. The Moto G range is Moto’s affordable range so either is possible.

The seller is claiming that the device will come to market in March this year, and while that lines up with the end of MWC in Barcelona its a few months early for an annual cycle. While not outside the realms of possibility, it would, however, be odd.

The Moto G range is incredibly popular with its marriage of good hardware, great software and affordable pricing. I see Moto G3 and G4 devices everywhere and I’ve steered many people in recent times to buy the Moto G4 Plus including my mother and Aunty (I need to go on commission).

Have you tried the Moto G range? Would you consider a Moto G5?

Every time someone has asked me for phone purchase advice I’ve always recommended one of the Moto G devices. So far all 4 people who’ve bought one on my recommendation have been really happy with the phone..

  • BrainBeat

Those specs look like it is a very decent phone and all that most should need. If the price it right I am sure they will sell a heap of them. The only issue may be if they skimp on sensors as they have in the past. My X Play for example frustrates me that it does not have a gyro in it and so AR and VR do not work properly.

That is essentially a current model Moto Z Play with 1GB more RAM. Negatives are USB micro, smaller battery and a lower quality camera (mega pixels-wise).

      What’s wrong with Micro USB?

      • Choodi

Nothing is wrong with it, but wouldn’t you rather USB-C? Considering most people keep their phones for 18 months to 2 years, USB micro is going to be massively out of date by 2018-19. USB C seems the way to go.

  • I definitely recommend this for users. Some features of this phone like 32 GB storage, Fingerprint sensor and 3080 mAh battery is really admirable.

How come microUSB is disappointing? Didn’t USB Type C have issues? Or was that earlier on?

    • Duncan_J

The issue was to do with third party cables that did not meet the design spec for USB c.

      • john smith

I see. I still don’t know why a MicroUSB is disappointing. It takes a while to switch chargers with Android, and people need to realize that

        • Duncan_J

it takes a while because the companies don’t roll it out to lower models to make their higher models appear more premium.

          • john smith

That has nothing to do with what I was saying…
I was saying that the chargers will take a while to turn to USB Type C.
