There’s a lot happening with Samsung tonight, with the manufacturer launching their Note products as well as the Gear VR headset in Australia. So far we’ve received outright pricing for the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge, which will be selling in Samsung Experience stores and retailers for $949 and $1249 respectively. Optus is moving forward with their 4G Plus network, today announcing that they’ve enabled LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation on their 2300MHz TDD LTE-A network around Australia, with Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide users connected to the network the first to see the bump, and Canberra users to follow in the coming weeks. Carrier Aggregation allows Optus to combine the two 20MHz channels they operate in the 2300Mhz spectrum to offer speeds of up to 220Mbps. At an event in Sydney this morning, Telstra is announcing enhancements to its 4G LTE service. The carrier expects to expand the footprint of its 4G coverage so that reach 90% of the Australian population by the end of January 2015. Telstra plans to use the 700 MHz spectrum from 1 January to cover a 3km radius of the CBDs of all capital cities and 50 regional locations. Telstra have seen Optus’ offer to pay new customers $450 towards break fees incurred on a previous carrier, and have decided to offer potential Telstra customers the same deal. From September 16, in a move to help customers decide to join Telstra’s network, Telstra will offer customers credits up to $450 when they incur a contract break fee to transfer to Telstra. With the looming full scale launch of the 700MHz LTE network in Australia coming up in January, Telstra has been busily working on trialling the frequency in smaller markets to test for any issues which may come up in the full scale launch. Telstra announced trials of the network in Perth, Fremantle, Esperance, Mildura, Mt Isa and Griffith last month and today they’ve announced the 700MHz trial will go live in Sydney and Adelaide, with trials starting in those cities in mid-September.
