All the OTA Nexus updates and why they are slow to roll out.

By now, you either have received your OTA notification to download and update your device to the latest version of Jelly Bean – Android 4.3 (JWR66V) – but there are still some out there who are waiting. The curator of the Android Open Source Project, Jean-Baptiste Quéru has taken to Google+ to explain why the OTA updates for Nexus devices seem to take such a long time to come. Please don’t ask for the ETA of any given OTA. Here’s the deal: OTAs intentionally start very slowly, both in terms of numbers and in terms of timing. The goal is[Read More...]

Android 4.3 Factory Images available to download

After this mornings official announcement of Android 4.3, it appears that Google has released factory images for Android 4.3 for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 on the Google Developers website. The factory image is Android 4.3 – JWR66V. Which is a slight increment from the leak for the Nexus 4 which appeared last week, which was JWR66N. So, anyone who flashed that build to their device would be advised to flash the newest build to their device. The update will be rolled out to devices from today, however there is usually a protracted wait of[Read More...]

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Announced

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Announced

Google this morning have held a Press Conference in San Francisco where they have announced the new 2013 Nexus 7, Chromecast and Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), so what’s new in Android 4.3? If you remember when Google announced Android 4.2 last year, they introduced Multi Account Support. With Android 4.3 they have pushed it to a new level by allowing the owner of the Android device to set up restricted profiles. These restricted profiles work in the same way as multi user accounts and include the functionality to remove access to certain features from apps such as in-app purchases, or[Read More...]

T9 dialler finally added to AOSP with Android 4.3

T9 dialler finally added to AOSP with Android 4.3

Normally, one small feature of a new version of Android wouldn’t deserve a post of its own, but this has been a huge issue that many people have had with AOSP for a long time. In fact, while there are other benefits to custom ROMs, the lack of a T9 dialler in AOSP builds is the single factor, for me, that necessitates the use of CyanogenMod (or equivalent). The only Android phones that don’t ship with a T9 predictive dialler are Google’s Nexus devices. As custom and OEM ROMs have had this ability since the dawn of time, I honestly[Read More...]

Android 4.3 now ‘unofficially’ available for the Nexus 4

Android 4.3 now ‘unofficially’ available for the Nexus 4

The announcement this morning, of an event at Google next Wednesday – Thursday AEST – is rumoured to be the event where Android 4.3 is officially announced – along with a new Nexus 7 and possibly the Moto X. But instead of having to wait for the inevitably slow rollout of Android 4.3 to your Nexus 4, there is both a TWRP Recovery backup as well as a System Dump floating around the internet. The build number is JWR66N – the same as was seen leaked for the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition – with the J indicating that[Read More...]

Rumour: Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III skipping Android 4.2.2

Rumour: Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III skipping Android 4.2.2

According to an “insider”, Temefy is reporting that Samsung are debating whether or not two of their devices are going to get Jellybean 4.2.2 as an official update. The devices in question? Oh, only the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II. Fear not, however! The debate boils down to whether they should bother with 4.2.2, or simply update these devices straight to 4.3. This rumour comes following a recent delay for the Galaxy S III moving to 4.2.2, while the Note II has been stagnant for some time with no indication of Samsung’s intentions for software updates. The current[Read More...]

Software Update: Sony Xperia Z with Android 4.2.2

Software Update: Sony Xperia Z with Android 4.2.2

Last week, we started hearing reports that Sony‘s Android 4.2.2 update for the Xperia Z had begun rolling out worldwide. The update is said to finally bring Sony’s current flagship device up to date with the Android latest release, bringing with it a bunch of new features. As soon as I heard about it I started checking my device regularly for an OTA update, sadly to no avail – Sony’s PC Companion software was also no help. Being a good, impatient Android nerd, I took matters into my own hands! I quickly acquired the Global C6603 10.3.A.0.423 firmware, and installed it[Read More...]
