Android Distribution figures released – KitKat on almost a third of devices

It’s been almost two months since we saw the release of the Android Distribution numbers, but then releasing a major version of Android will certainly put things like this by the wayside for the time being. Google has today released the latest numbers, which were gathered in the 7-days leading up to November 3rd and they’re looking pretty good. KitKat now runs on over 30% of devices, up from 24.5% last time we checked in. Jelly Bean is a mish-mash of results, with small gains for some sub-versions and losses in others. Android Distribution numbers show KitKat is on almost a quarter of all devices

September has brought about a new update to the Android distribution numbers, and after reaching the heady heights of being on one-fifth of all Android devices last month, KitKat is now sitting on the edge of hitting the 25% mark. After racking up 54.5% market share in the Android world, Jelly Bean has shown only a slight dip in its share, retaining top spot on 54.4% of all Android devices. Former king-pin Gingerbread is now on only 11.6% of devices and looks set to continue its downward trend. So too is Ice-Cream Sandwich heading south, dropping 1% of market share[Read More...]

Froyo continues on at 0.7%. Public Service Announcement: We have Christmas, Fathers Day, and any number of birthdays coming up, if you know someone with a phone running something less than Android 4.x Upgrade them PLEASE! Android Distribution Numbers for June 2014

A new month, a new set of platform distribution numbers. It’s all good news as the rollout of Android 4.4 keeps increasing, with just a just over 4% increase in market share. For the rest of the platforms the numbers are still decent. Froyo continues to drop, down another 0.1%, continuing its inexorable march towards obsolesence. Gingerbread too has dropped, at seemingly a faster rate shedding 1.4% of their market share in a month. Ice Cream Sandwich use also dropped, down to 11.4% of the overall pie. Jelly Bean too saw a decrease in usage, going from an overall 58.4%[Read More...]

Android Distribution Numbers for May 2014

The Android distribution figures for May, taken seven days leading up to June 4th have been released and if you own an Android tablet running Honeycomb (Android 3.x) you can now consider yourself a statistical anomaly. The removal of Honeycomb is a big step, but Froyo continues to maintain a presence in the Android landscape with 0.8% of devices running the aging version of the OS. Gingerbread has finally dropped below 15% market share. The big news is that we can now say that 84.3% of devices are running one of the six iterations of Android 4.x (4.03-4.4). Sony advises further updates for a host of older Xperia phones will not be coming

All good things must come to an end, and so it is for Android updates to older model phones. Sony has updated the support pages for a range of their older model Xperia handsets noting that their build is the final version, meaning that owners should begin either accepting the final version of their software build or begin looking at the ROM community. The devices range in age from around the 18 – 24 months old, which seems to be about the average age for Smartphone updates, although the fact that a number of these devices are still only on[Read More...]
