Android Distribution Numbers show KitKat on one-fifth of devices

Google is a little late this month with distribution figures for Android, but there’s good news, with KitKat now showing as being installed on one-fifth of all Android devices out there. Jelly Bean for the most part declined in usage (except Android 4.2), but Gingerbread gained a little of its declining market share back, clawing back 0.1% of the user base out there. Froyo continues on at 0.7%. Public Service Announcement: We have Christmas, Fathers Day, and any number of birthdays coming up, if you know someone with a phone running something less than Android 4.x Upgrade them PLEASE! Android Distribution Numbers for June 2014

A new month, a new set of platform distribution numbers. It’s all good news as the rollout of Android 4.4 keeps increasing, with just a just over 4% increase in market share. For the rest of the platforms the numbers are still decent. Froyo continues to drop, down another 0.1%, continuing its inexorable march towards obsolesence. Gingerbread too has dropped, at seemingly a faster rate shedding 1.4% of their market share in a month. Ice Cream Sandwich use also dropped, down to 11.4% of the overall pie. Jelly Bean too saw a decrease in usage, going from an overall 58.4%[Read More...]

Android Distribution Numbers for May 2014

The Android distribution figures for May, taken seven days leading up to June 4th have been released and if you own an Android tablet running Honeycomb (Android 3.x) you can now consider yourself a statistical anomaly. The removal of Honeycomb is a big step, but Froyo continues to maintain a presence in the Android landscape with 0.8% of devices running the aging version of the OS. Gingerbread has finally dropped below 15% market share. The big news is that we can now say that 84.3% of devices are running one of the six iterations of Android 4.x (4.03-4.4). Sony advises further updates for a host of older Xperia phones will not be coming

All good things must come to an end, and so it is for Android updates to older model phones. Sony has updated the support pages for a range of their older model Xperia handsets noting that their build is the final version, meaning that owners should begin either accepting the final version of their software build or begin looking at the ROM community. The devices range in age from around the 18 – 24 months old, which seems to be about the average age for Smartphone updates, although the fact that a number of these devices are still only on[Read More...]

The NSW State electoral commission has gone Android, at least they will be, if a tender lodged with the NSW e-Tender website is correct. The tender from the State Electoral office is for the fulfillment of an order of between 5,000 and 5,900 Android tablets that will be used in the three Electoral Commissions of NSW, Queensland and Victoria. Specifications for the tablets are broad to say the least, screen sizes aren’t specified so could range from 7″ all the way up to the 18.4″ tablet sized screen of the Asus AIO. The only definite is that devices must be[Read More...]
