Android originally didn’t support touchscreen input until the iPhone came along

In the early days of Android, Google was only considering a traditional keyboard interface (like that shown above), and the advent of a touch-screen interface came much later with the release of the first iPhone. As part of the continued hearing in the US Supreme Court between Apple and Samsung, Google’s Android engineering VP Hiroshi Lockheimer was placed on the stand and gave evidence about the early days of Android. He explained that as of 2006, the Android open platform only considered the use of a physical keyboard as part of the OS operation and hardware requirements. Lockheimer’s documents were[Read More...]

Why your iPhone’s touch screen is inaccurate, and why Samsung’s Galaxy S3 handset is better

Why your iPhone’s touch screen is inaccurate, and why Samsung’s Galaxy S3 handset is better

Those of you who’ve used an iPhone, particularly the later models, will probably have noticed the same kind of thing as we have. That is, the digitiser really isn’t all that good, and your perceived inaccuracy of your typing can leave one feeling quite annoyed. Well, Finnish firm OptoFidelity have used a robot and a robotic finger, and compared the touch sensitivity of the newest iPhone handsets, the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S, with a slightly older, yet extremely popular, Samsung Galaxy SIII. While Samsung’s phone is a good deal older than the Apple models, never fear. Take a look[Read More...]

Galaxy S4 advertising continues to compare directly to the iPhone

Galaxy S4 advertising continues to compare directly to the iPhone

Samsung continues it’s extremely un-subtle approach to taking on the iPhone in their latest television advertising campaign. The commercial shows a discussion between an iPhone user and an owner of the Galaxy S4, they discuss various features of the phone, like Simple Mode as well as the Smart Pause function for video. Samsung has also made efforts to say just how easy it is to switch to a Galaxy S4 with a minimum of fuss and bother. The advertising is certainly a dig at what Samsung feels is the Apple closed eco-system approach and by comparison how easy, simple and[Read More...]

Samsung Galaxy S3 fares slightly better in blender than iPhone 5

Samsung Galaxy S3 fares slightly better in blender than iPhone 5

The wonderful boffins at Blendtec are at it again, turning shiny gadgets into dangerous black smoke. This time around they pitted Apple’s iPhone 5 against the Samsung Galaxy S3, and in spite of criticism of the latter for its ‘cheap, plasticky’ build quality, the video evidence is clearly in its favour. Obviously both phones end up as expensive black dust in the end, but the iPhone 5 disintegrates almost as soon as it hits the blades, while the Galaxy S3 bounces around intact for a while before finally succumbing. So if you’re tossing up between the Galaxy S3 and the iPhone[Read More...]

Samsung fires directly at Apple’s iPhone 5 in new ads promoting the Galaxy S III

Samsung fires directly at Apple’s iPhone 5 in new ads promoting the Galaxy S III

Samsung have launched a new ad that doesn’t hold back against Apple’s brand new iPhone 5. The ad, shown below, aims to inform people that the Galaxy S III is already the best of the best, so don’t even bother with this new bit of technology. The specs listed for the Galaxy S III are for the 4G version of the device, so those of you with the 3G version won’t have 2GB of RAM. We’re liking that Samsung is going straight in for the attack now that they have the hardware to back them up. I wonder how long[Read More...]

Foxconn CEO: iPhone 5 “will put Samsung’s Galaxy S III to shame”

Foxconn CEO: iPhone 5 “will put Samsung’s Galaxy S III to shame”

Foxconn’s vocal CEO has already begun touting Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 saying that it “will put Samsung’s Galaxy S III to shame” to a group of shareholders at a meeting. This obviously a confirmation of how “great” the iPhone 5 will be, considering it’s the Foxconn CEO’s job to sell the products they make as the best thing ever, especially to shareholders. If rumours are correct, then Samsung won’t be all that fussed if the iPhone 5 surpasses the Galaxy S III in terms of stats and specs, because they’re expected to launch the Galaxy Note II around the same[Read More...]

What happens when Ausdroid looks at an iPhone 4s?

What happens when Ausdroid looks at an iPhone 4s?

When the Apple event earlier in October unveiled the iPhone 4s, we all had a bit of a chuckle. All around the web, people had been predicting the impending release of the iPhone 5, only to be disappointed (and amused) when the iPhone 4s was announced. Buzz did a little write-up comparing the iPhone 4s’ specs to various Android phones already on market, and those expected to come shortly. Stacked up against the Android horde, the iPhone 4s didn’t look particularly appealing. However, as I have to use one to access my stuff at work, I thought I’d go purchase[Read More...]

Android top dog in Australia for smartphone sales – knocks iPhone off top spot

Android top dog in Australia for smartphone sales – knocks iPhone off top spot

It was always going to happen eventually. Android has grown at an exponential rate and it was only matter a of time. In the 12 weeks up to August 7, Android handsets accounted for more then 42% of smartphone purchases, with the iPhone hitting just over 37%, the likes of Symbian, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 making up the rest. This is good news, but the question is how long will it stay like that? Yes Android is on hundreds of different handsets by a assortment of different manufacturers, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, Sony Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE, the list goes[Read More...]
