Optus adds more LTE services on 2600MHz and 700MHz bands

The race is on between Australian carriers to expand their networks to cover as much of the populated areas of Australia as possible. Today Optus has announced that they’ve added 4G service on the 2600MHz band to 40 sites around Australia, as well as receiving early access licence approvals from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to extend their 700MHz trial to 200 more sites. There’s a big push on 4G expansion from Optus, with the carrier attempting to cover 90% of the Australian population by April 2015. Optus Networks Managing Director, Vic McClelland said: This is a great[Read More...]

Optus adds the Samsung Galaxy Young 2 to their pre-paid line of devices for $99

Optus adds the Samsung Galaxy Young 2 to their pre-paid line of devices for $99

Optus have added another low-end phone to their pre-paid line, adding the Samsung Galaxy Young 2 for $99. The Galaxy Young 2, being an entry level device, isn’t going to be winning any awards in the design or specs categories. But it is a Samsung phone, which means it’s generally reliable and unlike some other manufacturers phones, could conceivably see an update to its operating system at some point in its life. It’s not a bad looking phone, mainly in keeping with Samsungs design sensibilities, although it’s no Galaxy Alpha in terms of looks, it’s definitely functional. The list of[Read More...]

Optus launches Cash by Optus; NFC payments

Optus launches Cash by Optus; NFC payments

Optus has announced a Cash by Optus, a new NFC-based payment service for Australia, but this one comes with a bit of a difference. It’s actually available now, it works on just about any modern Android smartphone (as long as it has NFC), and it’s available for all post-paid Optus customers. Better yet, it’ll work with any contactless terminal. Why isn’t this bigger news? Launched in partnership with Heritage Bank (who have a fair bit of experience with prepaid card products), Cash by Optus operates as a virtual Visa payWave debit card which you can load with up to $500 at[Read More...]

But, even with a release date still a couple of weeks away, today you can pre-order the phone from Optus. The Note Edge is similarly priced to the Note 4, although slightly[Read More...]

Nexus 6 lists Optus as a supported carrier – but it’s probably not going to be offered by them

Nexus 6 lists Optus as a supported carrier – but it’s probably not going to be offered by them

When the Nexus 6 will show up and where is the big question at the moment. As one of the top carriers – in terms of coverage and subscriber base – many would like to see Optus carry the phone, and from the support page which Google has posted for the Nexus 6, it confirms it’s possible. The support page for the Nexus 6, lists the Networks and compatible carriers which offer compatible 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE bands for the phone and Optus is certainly listed – along with Vodafone. But there’s also a rider added at the top which[Read More...]

Optus Smart Safe online backup service closing its doors on December 1

Optus Smart Safe online backup service closing its doors on December 1

Optus has written in a letter to users that its online backup service Smart Safe will close, effective December 1 2014. The Smart Safe site has not yet been updated to reflect the closure. The service, which provided backup solutions for PCs and mobile devices, was provided for Optus customers by F-Secure – who also previously provided antivirus software for Optus customers. F-Secure has advised Optus that they’re shutting the Smart Safe product down (curious wording, that), and will offer its own services under its younited service. The termination of the product could reflect low customer uptake, which might itself[Read More...]

Which Australian carriers will offer the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9?

Which Australian carriers will offer the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9?

We’ve been doing the legwork today talking to manufacturers, carriers and retailers trying to find out Australian launch information for Google’s shiny new Nexus devices. Earlier this afternoon we received an official statement from Motorola. It’s time to find out what our carriers make of Google’s Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. With Motorola behind the new Nexus 6, and their preference for going straight to retail with their devices, we’re not expecting to see Australian carriers range the Nexus 6. We didn’t expect to see the Nexus 5 either though, and Telstra did surprise us in 2013. HTC on the[Read More...]

Samsung begins pushing Android 4.4 out to Galaxy S4 handsets

Samsung begins pushing Android 4.4 out to Galaxy S4 handsets

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is no longer the flagship phone for Samsung, but the phone still sold in massive numbers and we’ve been expecting Android 4.4 for the handset for a while, now Samsung has begun pushing the Android 4.4 update out for the Galaxy S4. We’ve been advised by a reader that their Optus GT-i9507 model is now receiving the 440MB update which takes the phone from Android 4.3 up to the current version of Android (4.4) – at least current for the next couple of weeks until Google releases Android L. The Firmware update: I9507XXUFNG2 – includes a[Read More...]
