Telstra’s LG Optimus G gets rooted, unlocked, and Cyanogenmodded

We’ve been playing with the LG Optimus G for a little while now, and while we loved it in our review, we’re liking it a whole lot more now. Yesterday, we received a tip that the specific variant of the Optimus G on sale in Australia had been rooted and unlocked. Having had some failed attempts at this in the past, I was keen to give this a try to see what could be achieved. Well, it seems, it’s not all that difficult. For those needing a quick introduction, this: rooting and unlock your phone are two different yet related[Read More...]

Australian availability details for the HTC One

Australian availability details for the HTC One

We’ve written a lot about the HTC One – in the weeks since the phone’s official Australian launch there’s been rumours of overseas launch delays and even frank admissions by HTC staff about their component sourcing issues. Despite the seemingly endless wait, and the looming release of a certain other flagship device, enthusiasm is still strong for the One. HTC has today announced on-contract availability across Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile, and Ausdroid will have a full Australian review coming soon. Some carriers are already operating registration and preorder pages for the device, while others will open up theirs[Read More...]

Rumour: HTC One to go on-sale on the 23rd of April on Telstra

We’re still waiting for the official word to come down from HTC on a launch date for the HTC One. But, we’ve just been advised that according to Telstras internal system the HTC One is due to go on-sale in Australia on the 23rd of April. No pricing or plan information has been assigned to the entry, we’re told but hopefully this shouldn’t be too far away. With HTC themselves confirming delays due to a number of issues including problems sourcing the ‘Ultra-Pixel’ camera sensor we have been given no information on an actual release of the highly anticipated phone.[Read More...]

LG Optimus G — Launch Event Wrap

LG Optimus G — Launch Event Wrap

On Wednesday morning, LG invited members of the Australian media to Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art for the launch of their new flagship device, the Optimus G. Take a second and read that back again – we’ve only just seen the Australian launch of the device that begat the Google Nexus 4, which was itself launched in overseas markets in September 2012. We were treated to some light breakfast catering – in this case, some breakfast food and your standard tea/coffee – before being ushered into a small theatre for a presentation from representatives of LG, Qualcomm, and Telstra. LG’s[Read More...]

Motorola X won’t be coming to Australia — Motorola source

Motorola X won’t be coming to Australia — Motorola source

EXCLUSIVE: Yesterday we had two Motorola X stories, the first one seemed to be debunked as inaccurate rumour (if not complete garbage) fairly quickly, and the second was picked up and run by a few other news sources as well, but regardless of the coverage, the second story we thought had some merit. Before you read further, please note our disclaimer: This is firmly in the rumour file. While the information is quite specific, we have been unable to independently verify it. Accordingly, make of this what you will — we can neither confirm, nor disprove, what we’ve been told,[Read More...]

More information on the Motorola X — this time for real?

More information on the Motorola X — this time for real?

This morning we brought you what initially appeared to be something approaching a realistic rumour regarding the Motorola X Phone. As it turns out, that news was largely unreliable and unsubstantiated rumour, and in respect of the imagery at least, provably false. You can see the pre-aged image used to create the fake as the article image; it’s clearly a (relatively) poorly made render. However, what we now have could well be more compelling. Ausdroid has exclusively received a tip from a well-placed individual, who has told us that: Camera will be 10mp rear (unconfirmed front of 5mp). Rumours of[Read More...]

ALDImobile launches tomorrow; here’s the details you need

We’ve told you about ALDImobile before but we thought that given the launch is tomorrow, we’d sum up everything we know about ALDI’s offering so you can make an informed choice about whether you might switch to ALDI’s new mobile plan(s). Network First and foremost, ALDImobile will be using Telstra’s 3G network, to deliver 3G coverage to 97% of the Australian population. Vodafone: Sony Xperia Z launches March 13

Vodafone: Sony Xperia Z launches March 13

Vodafone has today announced that they’ll be offering the black version of the Sony Xperia Z to customers instore, online and over the phone from March 13. The phone is available on a range of plans, but Vodafone is recommending the $60 plan, where you’ll pay nothing upfront for Sony’s new flagship device. This makes Vodafone the first Australian carrier to confirm pricing and availability of the device – we’re expecting Telstra and Optus will follow suit with similar dates. ARN has reported that Telstra will be selling the device in both black and white variants in stores, and the[Read More...]

Telstra expanding 4G network to meet broadband demand

Telstra to add a new 900 MHz 4G network In recognition of the increasing demand of mobile broadband users — both with smartphones and wireless dongles — Telstra has announced that it will be adding a ‘second’ 4G network to its arsenal, this time running on the 900 MHz band. Those of you who have witnessed Telstra’s network congestion will be rejoicing at this point — the dreaded ‘full signal and 3G indicator, but no data moving anywhere’ may become a thing of the past… until the new network gets congested too.
