The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) yesterday announced the results of the auction for the 700 MHz and 2.5 GHz spectrum bands in Australia. The auction began in May 2012, and ended up seeing Telstra and Optus vying for the coveted 700 MHz band as well as the 2.5 GHz which also went to surprise entrant, TPG. Kogan Mobile — Review

Kogan Mobile — Review

Late last year, Kogan entered the Australian telecommunications business as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, offering a number of attractive plans that promised to deliver services to Australian consumers at a rate befitting the company’s name. Could Australia’s disruptive entrepreneur, Ruslan Kogan, break into one of the toughest spaces and make a name for himself? The service was unique at the time – while other MVNOs piggybacked on Optus or Vodafone’s networks, Kogan was one of the first companies to purchase access to Telstra’s wholesale 3G network – this isn’t the same network that runs Telstra’s Next G service, though,[Read More...]

Telstra opens pre-orders for Samsung Galaxy S 4 – shipping May 2

If you are after the Galaxy S 4 on Telstra, your wait is over. Telstra have just let us know that they are now taking pre-orders online, which will begin shipping next week. Considering that Optus’ pre-orders sold out in less than one day, I’d recommend getting in as soon as possible. You can always try your luck picking one up in store on Saturday, but not all stores will have stock available, and the ones that do are likely to sell out quickly as well. For a complete list of stores that will be carrying the device, visit Telstra’s[Read More...]

HTC One on sale in Australia today

HTC One on sale in Australia today

Today is the day that many Android users (and would-be Android users) have been waiting for. While Ausdroid hasn’t yet reviewed the HTC One (rest assured, it’s coming soon) we believe that it is probably one of the best Android handsets you’ll see this year. It may even best the Samsung Galaxy S4 — indeed, from some[Read More...]

Telstra’s LG Optimus G gets rooted, unlocked, and Cyanogenmodded

We’ve been playing with the LG Optimus G for a little while now, and while we loved it in our review, we’re liking it a whole lot more now. Yesterday, we received a tip that the specific variant of the Optimus G on sale in Australia had been rooted and unlocked. Having had some failed attempts at this in the past, I was keen to give this a try to see what could be achieved. Well, it seems, it’s not all that difficult. For those needing a quick introduction, this: rooting and unlock your phone are two different yet related[Read More...]

Australian availability details for the HTC One

We’ve written a lot about the HTC One – in the weeks since the phone’s official Australian launch there’s been rumours of overseas launch delays and even frank admissions by HTC staff about their component sourcing issues. Despite the seemingly endless wait, and the looming release of a certain other flagship device, enthusiasm is still strong for the One. HTC has today announced on-contract availability across Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile, and Ausdroid will have a full Australian review coming soon. Rumour: HTC One to go on-sale on the 23rd of April on Telstra

We’re still waiting for the official word to come down from HTC on a launch date for the HTC One. But, we’ve just been advised that according to Telstras internal system the HTC One is due to go on-sale in Australia on the 23rd of April. No pricing or plan information has been assigned to the entry, we’re told but hopefully this shouldn’t be too far away. With HTC themselves confirming delays due to a number of issues including problems sourcing the ‘Ultra-Pixel’ camera sensor we have been given no information on an actual release of the highly anticipated phone.[Read More...]

LG Optimus G — Launch Event Wrap

LG Optimus G — Launch Event Wrap

On Wednesday morning, LG invited members of the Australian media to Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art for the launch of their new flagship device, the Optimus G. Take a second and read that back again – we’ve only just seen the Australian launch of the device that begat the Google Nexus 4, which was itself launched in overseas markets in September 2012. We were treated to some light breakfast catering – in this case, some breakfast food and your standard tea/coffee – before being ushered into a small theatre for a presentation from representatives of LG, Qualcomm, and Telstra. LG’s[Read More...]
