After last night`s info sourced from LG Italy came to light I asked LG Australia to confirm this would be happening on the phones in the Australian market and they issued this statement :

“LG confirms today that the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich OS) will be initially available for the following high-end LG smartphones which were introduced this year: Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black, the Optimus 3D.

We are also continuing to evaluate the Android 4.0 ( ICS) OS to determine whether it is compatible with the functionality, features and performance of other LG smartphones to make the software available on as many LG smartphones as possible.

In December this year, the forthcoming upgrade schedule and additional specific models for the ICS OS upgrade will be posted on www.lg.com.au and LG’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/lgaustralia)

Please refer to the information on the LG web site which details upgrade information for existing LG handset and stay tuned for more updates from LG.”

They also provided information on the update status of other LG Phones already released in Australia :

  • Optimus Spirit(P960) – Android 2.3(Gingerbread):
  • LG is evaluating the future software upgrade
    availability for this handset.
    Further OS release information will be
    provided as schedule is confirmed

  • Optimus Me(P350) – Android 2.2(Froyo):
  • No software upgrades to future versions of Android are
    scheduled for this device

  • Optimus One(P500) – Android 2.3(Gingerbread):
  • No software upgrades to future versions of Android are
    scheduled for this device

  • Optimus(GT540) – Android 2.1(Eclair):
  • No software upgrades to future versions of Android are
    scheduled for this device

Good to see they are still looking at the recently released Optimus Spirit as a possibility to receive Ice Cream Sandwich, although I wouldn`t hold my breath. So keep your eyes on LG`s Facebook page for an update sometime in December and of course we`ll keep you up to date as soon as we hear anything.

Odd that they are ‘evaluating future software upgrades’ for the Optimus Spirit, but not for the very similar though older Optimus One.

Judging by the way LG handled Gingerbread, these handsets won’t even be relevant anymore by the time they release ICS.

LG is not a choice for users who care about software support.
