Daily App Sales Roundup – 16-07-2012

I’m still messing with the format of these posts and I want to try talking about apps on one subject – like todays post is about reading Comics on Android. I’m open to suggestions on whether this should be a daily post with sales and suggested free apps or good apps, or a weekly post with a roundup of sales or if you want a weekly post like this will be that discusses some of the apps in a category or perhaps go even more in-depth with screenshots etc. Feel free to weigh in and suggest formats and frequency of the posts.

I used to collect comics in a big way but eventually had to stop, now with my Nexus 7 on the way I want to start looking at getting my collection back but in a digital format as I have no room to store the physical comics, so what options does a digital comic geek have on Android :

First up is probably the biggest one of them allComics by ComiXology, if you own a tablet and love to buy and read comics then this one is for you, you can purchase thousands of comics from publishers like Marvel, DC, Valiant and image. As well as your tablet you can read them on the phone but quite frankly I haven`t found that experience to be that great, but you can also go to their website to view the comics you’ve purchased.

You can also try out DC Comics App which is from the same developer as the Comics app, but specifically aimed at DC Comics. Pretty similar content but I think you’ll find you’re satisfied with the Comics app

Or you could try the other publisher Marvel, who make their own comics app. They have 3,500 comics available and are adding more, they email me with specials all the time and some of them are actually pretty decent if you’re a Marvel fanboy and these days with all the great Marvel universe movies appearing, who isn’t why not try out their app.

One of the publishers I found to be missing from the app from ComiXology was Dark Horse who also have their own Android app, I used to purchase all of my Alien, Terminator, Star Wars and Predator comics from them, they also do other non-movie related comics but their licensed range is awesome. Their comics range in price from $0.99 for single issues and they have a pretty good selection so check them out.

As well as these main-stream viewers are comic viewers that read CBR/CBZ files, these are Zip or RAR files with scans of comics in them which you may or may not have created yourself from your own comics. The main one I’ve used has been A Comic Viewer it has a basic interface which allows you to load up the comics in those formats and view them. I think it scales them quite nicely.

If you know of a good app you’d like to share or see an app on sale that you feel is a good deal, let me know by tweeting me or emailing me
