Todays app was recommended by Carsten who asked us to take a look at GoComics.

The concept of GoComics is good, it basically tries to aggregate all the comic strips you normally look at into one place. You’ll need to sign up for an account to use most of the features like favouriting strips. Most of the large comics from yesteryear are included like Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes and Garfield, what I found annoying though is they are missing popular new webcomics such as XKCD and Cyanide & Happiness as well as my personal favourite Insanity Streak.

Over all the interface is a little – as Jason put it – ‘clunky’, it wasn’t terribly smooth overall. I also found ad placement to be odd, menu bars showing up over ads and then disappearing just seemed to be designed to get you to accidentally tap on an ad. I did like the concept but found it’s not quite where I personally would like it to be but I will be keeping an eye on the app, if nothing else for the Calvin and Hobbes and Dilbert strips.

The app is free – but ad supported – in Google Play, it’s a 5.3MB download and requires a device running Android 2.2 and upwards, see what you think.

Found a good deal on an app you’d like to share? Are you an Australian developer with an app you would like reviewed? Or have you found a most expensive app on the Play Store? Let me know! You can tweet me or email me.

How is an app like Go Comics legal? I remember a few years ago one of the better web comic aggregators was blammed into non existence for daring to collect revenue for other peoples content. I suspect this one won’t last long either.

I thought go comics was the online host of traditional syndicated newspaper comics. ie if you write Garfield, and have been in the business since before the net comes along, your agent ticks a box and go comics puts up a site for you and you get some royalties from online to go with your huge newspaper royalties.

Think of them like a traditional big music label only because normally consumers don’t get comics directly – usually through a newspaper – you’ve never really heard of them.

They’re part of the business, they won’t get shut down.
