It’s update day for Motorola, and today’s updates may contain a welcome surprise for owners of their 2012 flagships, the RAZR HD and RAZR M.

Stateside, Motorola released a KitKat update for the Moto X, making it the first Android OEM to do so, and it’s even beaten the Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 and HTC One devices to the punch.

Contrary to earlier reports, Motorola’s support site is today showing that the HD & M handsets will see an update to KitKat. This is a little surprising as both devices stopped receiving updates after Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rollout from early 2013 and had their support pages updated to indicate that they “will remain on Android 4.1”.

It’s unknown whether these updates will come to Australia, though Motorola’s Australian support site has also removed the “remain on Android 4.1” verbiage and replaced it with “Future plan coming soon”.

Waking up to this news this morning makes me feel a little guilty for my earlier Twitter snark:

… but only a little. There’s no denying that communication around software updates from Motorola has been especially poor this year.

We’ll check in with Motorola Australia and see if there’s any further news and update accordingly, but if you’ve held off buying a cheap RAZR M then today might be the day to pull that trigger!

Does this news revive your interest in Motorola’s flagships of yesteryear? Let us know in the comments.

What about us poor Razr V owners…..so far we only got 1 update to 4.1.2 and Motocrapola has already abandoned it.

It has NOT been 18 months since its release!!!

I have a Razr HD an I’ll be dirty if we don’t get KK. Especially now that Motorola is a Google company. Moto have done the dirty on it’s customers with lack of updates, ridiculous waits for updates, and poor quality updates many times before (*cough* Defy *cough* Atrix *cough*) so it wouldn’t surprise me either way. But if KK doesn’t happen it may well be the nail in Motorola’s virtual coffin for me. Does the 18 month update rule still apply? The HD and M have only been released for 12 months, and it’s not like they have released… Read more ยป
