Fitness Trackers

Fitness trackers generally monitor your activity in terms of footsteps with a companion mobile app or web console allowing you to specify things from dietary intake to types of exercise. They’ll also often allow you to track sleeping patterns.

FitBit – Zip, One, Flex
The FitBit Zip is a small device that fits into a silicon clip to attach to your pockets or clothing. The One adds a few tricks to that while still retaining the clip-on form, and the Flex is a newer-style wristband. FitBit devices generally work with Android devices running Android 4.3 and above via Bluetooth, but you should probably check device compatibility before you buy. You can use them without the app though, with a small Bluetooth adapter included in the box.

Jawbone – Up, Up24
Jawbone Up24Like the FitBit Flex, Jawbone’s original Up and newer Up 24 products are wristbands that will track your activity and consolidate it in a neat reporting interface for you. Both bands look identical, but the newer Up 24 connects to your device via Bluetooth.

As we increasingly use web-based services for our online activities, many are finding they don’t need a full Windows or Mac computer to check emails, use social networks and chat to friends online. If your mum only ever runs a web browser, consider the gift of a Chromebook. They’re fast and portable with great battery life.

Before discovering the Nexus One, Jason thought he didn't need a smartphone. Now he can't bear to be without his Android phone. Jason hails from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane depending on his mood and how detailed a history you'd like. A web developer by day with an interest in consumer gadgets and electronics, he also enjoys reading comics and has a worryingly large collection of Transformers figures. He'd like to think he's a gamer, but his Wii has been in a box since he moved to Sydney, and his PlayStation Vita collection is quite lacking. Most mornings you'll find him tilting at various windmills on Twitter - follow @JM77 and say hi!
