Sony SmartBand now available through Telstra and Sony stores, RRP $159

Smartband bands 3

Sony‘s new wrist-wearable fitness tracker SmartBand is now available locally from Telstra, Sony Online and Sony Centres / Kiosks with more retailers to follow soon

The device RRP is $159, and Telstra users can get it on contract as an “Accessory Repayment Option” for $39 upfront + $5 / month over two years – which funnily enough, adds up to $150.

The SmartBand was first announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, and we noted that it had become available for preorder last week.

It connects with Sony’s LifeBlog app available from Google Play and logs your life (as it says on the box). It counts steps and estimates calories burned, lets you know when a call or message comes in on your phone and can track your sleeping habits. We’re looking forward to it as it’s a wearable device from a major manufacturer that will operate across a broad range of Android devices running KitKat without vendor lock-in.

2014 is definitely the year of the wearable, and we’re hoping to take a look at Sony’s new wristband soon!

Uhhh… 39 + (24 * 5) = 39 + 120 = 159. Don’t know where the $9 went missing.

Adjusting for inflation, it ends up slightly cheaper on contract, but not by $9
