OTA updates arriving on Nexus 9 – spoiler: it’s not Android 5.1

Android 5.0.2 - Nexus 9
If the news the other day that OTA updates for the seemingly long neglected Nexus 9 weren’t far away got you excited, your excitement will be muted this morning, with the OTA update arriving but not with Android 5.1. Nexus 9 owners this morning are receiving the prompt above to download a 23.3MB OTA update to update their tablet to Android 5.0.2.

The update is seemingly fairly widely available, but if you haven’t received the update prompt, the OTA update URL has been captured and you can download it here:

There’s unconfirmed reports floating about that the 5.1 update for the Nexus 9 was approved today, but take that with a grain of salt. In the meantime, enjoy your Android 5.0.2 update.

Dan is a die-hard Android fan. Some might even call him a lunatic. He's been an Android user since Android was a thing, and if there's a phone that's run Android, chances are he owns it (his Nexus collection is second-to-none) or has used it.

Why wouldn’t they just push these updates with the 5.1 OTA? Strange, unless this is some sort of pre requisite fix for the 5.1 update.
