Blackberry Venice portrait slider shows up in the wild

BlackBerry’s apparent hero Android device codenamed Venice has been leaking rather heavily of late, from renders and information on US carrier support and now we have pics of the phone in the wild.

The phone has shown up in Vietnam, where website Tinthe has described the size of the unit as ‘a handset quite thick and large’, which seems to be corroborated by the photos supplied. The screen appears curved as we’ve seen in the previous renders and is confirmed by the forum poster.

The phone has what appears to be a carbon fibre patterned rear and shows a dual button volume rocker on the right and power button on the left. 9to5Google also comments on the button between the volume buttons which they say is for a hardware link to the Blackberry Assistant – Blackberry’s Google Now type assistant.

Other specs include separate microSD and SIM card trays mounted on the top of the phone, with a lip beneath the keyboard at the bottom of the phone.

The site has also listed information about the camera, stating that test shots show that the results are 18MP and that the camera has built-in Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). We can also see from the pics that a Dual-LED flash is on-board which should make for a decent night picture when OIS just won’t do.

One strange trend we’ve noticed with Blackberry phone leaks such as the Passport running Android the other day is the pixelated bottom right of the screen. We’re not sure why, but possibly some sort of identifying mark on BlackBerry prototypes is at play.

Currently the BlackBerry ‘Venice’ is scheduled for release in the US in November. We’ll be waiting for more information on Australian launch when or if BlackBerry goes ahead with their launch.

Dan is a die-hard Android fan. Some might even call him a lunatic. He's been an Android user since Android was a thing, and if there's a phone that's run Android, chances are he owns it (his Nexus collection is second-to-none) or has used it.

Dan's dedication to Ausdroid is without question, and he has represented us at some of the biggest international events in our industry including Google I/O, Mobile World Congress, CES and IFA.

It’s so long! It will need to be light at the top and heavy at the bottom to balance it properly. Looks like a Logitech ULR or something.

If it’s fast with a decent camera, this is my next phone; replacing my s6 edge.
