Announced for other markets back in July, the HTC Desire 520 has today launched on the Optus Pre-Paid range for $199 bringing with it 4G speeds and HTC’s distinctive Desire design flare.

The phone contains a 4G modem designed for the Optus 4G Plus network, making the phone ‘the perfect entry level mobile media device’ says Ben Hodgson, Country Manager HTC Australia and New Zealand. The Optus 4G Plus network lets users take advantage of ‘smoother streaming, improved indoor coverage and better internet experience’ says Tim Cowan Director of Mobile Marketing, Optus.

At $199, the phone isn’t high end, but then again HTC and Optus haven’t exactly skimped on the internals either with a 4.5″ 854×480 resolution display making the phone quite compact and easy to fit in your hand. The phone has a 1.1GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor and 1GB of RAM under the hood and 8GB of storage with a microSD card slot backing it up, there’s an 8MP camera on the rear and a 2MP up front for those all important selfies and a fairly nicely sized 2,000mAh battery.

The Desire 520 comes with HTC Sense 7 overlayed on Android Lollipop offering the HTC Sense theming engine to allow you to create your own style with personalised font, icons and colour pallete. The phone also includes HTC’s impressive Blinkfeed service for all your news feeds.

The HTC Desire 520 is available from Optus now online and in-store in Slate Grey for $199, head over to the Optus pre-paid or HTC websites for more information.

I don’t get it. With the inability to install apps to SD or to move apps to SD, why do manufacturers insist on 8GB of internal storage. Allowing for the O/S installation, 8GB is not nearly enough to install a lot of apps. This could have been my private phone (work phone is an HTC One M8s) but not with such a small amount of internal storage. Might look away from HTC. Happy for people to point me in the right direction.

and thats 8gb BEFORE the OS consumes most of it.

Android 6.0 will fix the ‘inability to install apps to SD’ though, by allowing you to merge the two together. BUT the device has to get a 6.0 update for that to happen!
