Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P users can download and use Fitbit without wearing an actual Fitbit tracker

FitBit have quietly pushed out an update for its app that enables Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P users to use the app without actually wearing a Fitbit tracker.

The update information from the Play Store listing says this of the update:

Introducing MobileTrack on Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. You can now use the Fitbit app without a Fitbit tracker by using your phone’s sensors to track basic activity data including steps, distance, and calories burned.

The interesting part for us here at Ausdroid is that normally Fitbit is very strict with their proprietary technology and software, and the ability to now use a smartphone instead of a fitness tracker that would normally cost you from about $100 upwards, is not easily dismissed.

Furthermore, its interesting that Fitbit aren’t allowing Android Wear devices the ability to keep track of your fitness goals given nearly all Android Wear smartwatch do come with GPS and heart rate monitors, that is unless you are using the Sony Smartwatch 3, then well, sorry you miss out.

If you are a Nexus 5X or a Nexus 6P user and use or have a Fitbit tracker and want to ditch it, you can head over to Google Play and get the update to the Fitbit app via the link below.

Wow, I’m gonna try this out. Glad I haven’t (yet) thrown out my 5X. But I’m worried how the already poor battery life will suffer as the app presumably needs GPS turned on.

wow, interesting integration… what is it about these phones that allow special privileges by fitbit… i guess more phones will come but surprised that just the two nexus are all when announced.

I use to use goggle fit with my LG G Watch R, but brought a fitbit due to the lack of information in google fit. Fitbit is pretty cool for allowing this. Definitely try it out. Its easily better then google fit

Without installing it, is it worth the install over just using Google Fit?
