Motorola Reluctantly Adds G4 Plus to Oreo Upgrade List

A great disturbance was felt in the force a few days ago when Motorola announced their list of phone’s which would be getting an upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo, leaving out the Moto G4 Plus which had been promised that upgrade at time of sale.

When it was launched in Australia just over a year ago Ausdroid praised the G4 Plus in our review, saying:

“As a super-mid, the Moto G4 Plus blends the best of high-end phones and their features with a budget cost”

After bearing the brunt of several days of Internet rage from Motorola fans who felt they had been misled, the company has decided that the G4 Plus will get an upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo after all.

Trying to make it seem like they weren’t aware of their earlier promise, Motorola PR just made a statement on their blog that they had “learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus” since the time of posting their list of models which would get an upgrade to Android 8.0:

“It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info”

We doubt that aggrieved Moto G4 buyers would have got their phones into the upgrade list for Android 8.0 without the coverage from independent Android blogs. This is disappointing.

We have asked Motorola Australia to comment on the issue and whether the G4 will also get an upgrade to Android 8.0.

If you own a G4 Plus or have bought some for your family members please let Ausdroid know if/when the Android 8.0 update gets released for the phone.

What do you think about this change of mind by Moto and their statement that “It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device”? Please let us know in the comments

After my terrible no-updates-past-Froyo experience with Moto Atrix, I will never buy a Motorola phone no matter what they do now and in the future.

One upgrade might be OK if they committed to regular security patching. My g5 plus is still on the March 2017 security patch – not good enough in this day and age. Otherwise if the only way to get a security patch is a full version upgrade then they should commit to at least two upgrades for a device.
