We’ve been impressed with the Nokia devices that HMD Global have delivered so far. We’ve also been impressed with the speed of security updates that have been delivered to the devices. They’ve impressed further the the promise of Android Oreo being delivered to their entire range of devices – Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 that were launched this year and the further promise of Android P when it becomes available next year.

The announcements were made during their launch of the Nokia 8 in the Philippines and broadcast live on Facebook. While we’ve already seen the device launch in Australia, it’s worth a watch if you’ve got an hour to spare with some great information and (for a media show at least) a really solid presentation with lots of information.

Further (and wonderful) news for those inclined that way is that Nokia are also progressively planning on unlocking the bootloaders of their devices which shows that they’ve adapted well to the open source world of Android and are embracing the fact that not everyone likes stock ROMs. This followed a series of Tweets by them originally saying they would not unlock their bootloaders but would offer their kernel source to the open source community. Community pressure has obviously convinced them to allow their users to officially unlock their bootloaders.

There’s plenty to like about the HMD Global announcement and their recently released phones. We’ll keep our ears to the ground and let the Ausdroid community know when there’s more news available.

Are the Nokia range of devices appealing to you?

I’d probably have bought a Nokia if they had one with a decent sized screen and more RAM.
