There’s no doubt that when it comes to Android device releases, Samsung’s Galaxy S series attracts a lot of attention. The rumours about next years Galaxy S9 & S9+ have already started with details from the ever reliable Evan Blass appearing, as well as some renders from a not so reliable source showing up.

According to Evan via Venture Beat, the Galaxy S9 & S9+ will be making an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January. The phones will be mainly ‘iterative’ according to Evans source, with the design not changing from this years Galaxy S8/S8+.

The S9/S9+, known internally at Samsung as Star 1 & Star 2 – will be launched as the SM-G960 and SM-G965. Hardware wise, the phones will retain the 5.8″ and 6.2″ curved-edge ‘Infinity’ AMOLED displays Samsung is known for. It’s likely the phones will use the Snapdragon 845 and the equivalent 10nm Exynos version in selected markets.

While the S8/S8+ were identical in terms of RAM, the S9/S9+ will depart from this, with the S9+ being launched with 6GB of RAM, while the S9 will remain at 4GB, as well as coming with a dual-camera setup. 64GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot will be present as well.

Sound wise, the Galaxy S9/S9+ will receive AKG Stereo Speakers – and good news: the 3.5mm headphone jack is staying.

The design of the phones rear camera setup will change with a vertical mounting that will place the fingerprint sensor below the cameras. This should address complaints about the Galaxy S8/S8+ and the Note 8 which most users found the fingerprint sensor to be quite awkwardly placed.

This new setup is also ‘confirmed’ by the appearance of some purported cases for the Galaxy S9 from manufacturer Ghostek, which showed up on BoyGeniusReport. As you can see, the render shows this exact setup:

The renders also show that the Bixby button will again be present on the Galaxy S9/S9+.

The final piece of news from Evan surrounds the DeX docking station that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S8. The new version will have the phones laid flat, allowing them to be used as a trackpad or virtual keyboard.

Rumours surrounding when we’ll see the Galaxy S9 announced fluctuate between January and just prior to Mobile World Congress. It’s early days, but the leaks will begin flowing freely soon enough.

Are you excited for the Galaxy S9?
