Surprising many, the Samsung Galaxy S9 has just passed through the FCC … in 2017

The hype is building around the upcoming announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and today it had another spike. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ surfaced on the FCC website and considering we all thought they would be announced in late February it is extremely early to be seeing this.

The Samsung models that have passed through the FCC are the SM-G960F, the SM-G960F/DS, the SM-G960X and the SM-G965F, SM-G965F/DS and the SM-G965X. The G960 versions are expected to be the Galaxy S9 variants and the G965 the Galaxy S9+ version.

Aside from the model numbers very little else can be gleaned from the FCC documents but one thing — the timing of the FCC testing. Usually testing and FCC approval is obtained perilously close to any announcement or launch of a device to attempt to keep it as secret as possible. Could Samsung be planning on some kind of announcement at CES 2018 when they reveal their new Exynos processor?

This year the two Galaxy S9 variants are expected to arrive with Samsung’s new Exynos processor or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (depending on the region). There are rumours of a single camera on the Galaxy S9 and a dual camera on the Galaxy S9+ which, if true, is surprising that they would differentiate the two like that.

At this stage all other hints suggest the usual announcement around MWC time but this new arrival a the FCC may suggest otherwise.

What do you think? Do you care for the Galaxy S9?

Well given how widely leaked upcoming phones seem to be nowadays, I’m not surprised that Samsung decided to get FCC approval this early.
