The Nexus Player is coming up on four years old, and although it was assumed, Google has confirmed that the Android TV device has reached end of life when it comes to updates.

Android Police has confirmed with Google that the Nexus Player will receive no further updates, that includes both feature and security updates.

With this confirmation, Google now has no supported developer hardware for the Android TV platform. Developers can, as pointed out by Android Police, continue to develop for Android TV by using the Android TV emulator in Android Studio, but nothing beats a piece of hardware right? Can we get a Pixel Player Google?

There is of course always the ROM community, with developers working on Lineage OS builds for the Nexus Player, so if that interests you, you can always check that out.

Dan is a die-hard Android fan. Some might even call him a lunatic. He's been an Android user since Android was a thing, and if there's a phone that's run Android, chances are he owns it (his Nexus collection is second-to-none) or has used it.

Dan's dedication to Ausdroid is without question, and he has represented us at some of the biggest international events in our industry including Google I/O, Mobile World Congress, CES and IFA.
