Right on schedule, Google has this morning released the fifth Android Developer Preview (Beta 4) for both Pixel and Pixel 2 phones (XL included), with OTAs rolling out now.

For those keeping count, this is the final developer preview before a final release due some time in Q3 (likely next month), with the release marked as a release candidate thanks to the APIs being finalised in Dev Preview 3. Google confirmed that official Android P is coming soon in their announcement post.

The new Android P build – PPP5.180610.010 – includes the latest July security patch, and is available to download now from the Android P developer site, or through OTA to phones enrolled in the Beta program at g.co/androidbeta.

The previous Beta releases have been fairly stable, and Google hasn’t made note of any particular issues as they have previously, so it may be time to try it out. If you have a Pixel or Pixel 2 you can jump on board through the Beta or by flashing the full image.

Only problem I’ve been having on the beta which is on my Daily driver, pixel 2 xl is the message app is quite slow sending messages to iPhones and crashing the app multiple times a day, anyone else have this problem? I have noticed that, my friends and family that have android phones the messages go through as normal, only the people with iPhones.

    Hi Jim,

To test this, I just sent a text message from my Pixel 2 XL to a mate in the same room with an iPhone. I’m on Vodafone, he’s on Telstra. It was almost instantaneous.

    Hi Daniel,

I installed it on my Pixel 2 XL today. I hadn’t been quite “game” until now. As best as I can tell, it’s as smooth as silk.

    Thank you,

    Al Thomas

Do we know if NFC is enabled in this preview?

NFC has been working on my Pixel 2 XL on every single build, right from Developer Preview 1.

I’d read NFC was unavailable from build two. Good news then!
