Oops, Google accidentally changed a battery setting on Android phones by mistake

The Battery Saver mode on phones is supposed to be an option that can eke out the last of your battery when you get down to the very last few percent. However it appears that Google has accidentally rolled out an update to phones running the Android Pie update or Beta which enables it even when the phone is fully charged.

In a post on reddit on Thursday, Google’s Pixel team advised that it was an internal test “was mistakenly rolled out to more users than intended”.

The effect to users was a lack of apps updating in the background, location services not in use when the phone is in standby and notifications being delayed. It’s not just Pixel phones that have been affected by the bug but also the Essential Phone on Android Pie and Nokia 7+ and OnePlus 6 on the Android Pie Beta according to Android Police.

In their Reddit response, the team advised they had rolled back the battery saver setting to default for those who were affected – Google (and Apple) retain the ability to switch certain things on and off on your device, so you might have to enable it again if you prefer to have it switched on.

If you have noticed any of these issues and are running Android Pie or its Beta firmware, then you may want to check your battery saving mode to see if it is turned off or still maybe on.

  • Every sense I did the update my battery has turned to garbage.. on any given day I spend 3-4 random hours on YouTube and have several games I play daily, on top of other apps. Before the update my battery would last all day say 7am to around 11pm with no charge. After the update it literally lasts maybe 4 hours even unused.. have the pixel and love it but I wish I would have never done that stupid update.. it's annoying AF.. 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

  • Me too! What is up with that? I own a Nexus 6P, and the battery started dying at around the 20% mark, even after full charge. I'd love to know if a fix is in the works

  • Have Google fixed the fast response charge ability they broke with pie on pixel phones?

On the article, always wanted a battery saver available 100% of the time. Just something that pings what it needs every 5 minutes instead of every 10 seconds. Should be default imo.

  • I have a pixel 1 that has had battery ever since the update. I have called Google several times and they have "escalated the issue". Still waiting on a call from the escalations team, been over a week now. Thinking about complaining to ACCC as I am losing business as a result

    • Hi,
I had a notification come up on my Samsung S9 informing me that my phone had just done an auto-backup to my Samsung Cloud account. I specifically set auto-backup to off but the phone ignored the setting and also backed up an app that had no access permissions set. Privacy is a joke.

  • I woke that morning to my Pixel 2 XL running Pie and being on charge but with no Always On Display showing the time. I thought it was a bit strange and disconnected the charger and woke the phone to see the battery icon in the status bar was red. Hmm I thought what is going on here did I bump something on the phone when I went to bed.? Plus the phone only charged to 99% overnight which was strange. Then I pulled down the notification bar and found the battery saver was enabled, so I disabled it straight away and went on with my day until I checked my Google feed and found users on Reddit were reporting the exact same thing that had happened to me. Later in the day I checked my phone and had to set up the custom battery saver settings again but all is good now.
