We have seen and reviewed all smart displays that are available here in Australia and soon hopefully there will be one more on the way Downunder. At CES well known high-end home appliance manufacturer, KitchenAid, has announced that they will be coming to market with a smart display this year.

The KitchenAid Smart Display is a 10 inch display with a silver frame and IPX-5 water resistance. This means that it will be able to withstand a 6.3mm spray of water (12.5 litres per minute) in any direction for at least three minutes. That should be enough for even the messiest kitchen — it will be able to withstand wet hands and a small spray here and there but won’t be able to take a swim in your sink.

The smart display, running on Android Things, will have a front-facing camera for video calling and of course you will be able to watch YouTube, play music and control your smart home on it, all while you whip up something semi-edible in the kitchen.

KitchenAid are looking to differentiate theirs from the other smart displays not just with their water resistance but also with exclusive cooking content from their parent company Whirlpool’s app Yummly. Yummly will be able to be opened with voice control and you will then be able to choose a recipe and have the app walk you through the cooking steps to create the dish. Of course, being a content world, there is a pro version of the app with videos from celebrity chefs.

The KitchenAid Smart Display will be priced around US$200-US$300 but if it makes it here do the usual converting from US to AUD and hopefully you will have an approximate price expected for us.

We have reached out to KitchenAid Australia for local availability and pricing details.

Another smart display The more the merrier. KitchenAid’s inbuilt custom recipe videos are a bonus. Previously, the only other splashproof device was the JBL Link View.

Yesterday LG announced various appliances to get Google Assistant. I get the feeling Apple is really getting left behind here. CEO Tim Cook let Siri wither on the vine for five years.

Yeah Alexa is the real threat to Assistant (or vice versa since it launched properly on dedicated hardware first?) . Siri seems to have missed the boat to be any real threat. I have personally bought into google being a long time nexus/pixel owner but I am still on the fence as to who will win in the end. Seeing more and more devices announce both gives me comfort but the trend seems to be announce both, release with one and then watch tumbleweeds roll past (aka sonos)… One exception was when I saw my Bose QC35vII get an update… Read more »
