One of the biggest criticisms of non-premium phones is that they either don’t get updates, or don’t get them regularly. Nokia’s smartphones have mostly bucked that trend, and now, Nokia has begun to deliver Android Pie to their Nokia 5 users.

The Chief Product Officer of HMD Global, Juho Sarvikas has announced the beginning of the rollout on Twitter:

If you recall from yesterday it’s not just Nokia 5 owners that get all the fun. According to HMD Nokia’s roadmap the updates will continue to flow for other devices in the near future. The updates will come faster than ever before. Devices will see updates as follows:

  • Nokia 5 in or around January 2019
  • Nokia 3.1 Plus in or around January 2019
  • Nokia 6 in Q1 2019
  • Nokia 5.1 in Q1 2019
  • Nokia 3.1 in Q1 2019
  • Nokia 2.1 in Q1 2019
  • Nokia 3 during the early stages of Q2 2019
  • Nokia 1 during early Q2 2019


For those who have invested in Nokia devices, this is a great leap in terms of the long term (secure) viability of their phones and should give Nokia a solid footing as one of the leaders of the mid-pack of devices.

This is amazing stuff coming from Nokia.

Thanks to Nokia alone, it’s now safe to buy a mid-range phone knowing that it will be supported by OS updates years into the future. This is great, and Nokia is the only one doing it.

I just hope they get rewarded by consumers with a corresponding increase in market share, then maybe others will follow.
