Year by year and device by device OnePlus phones have improved but with that improvement has come an increase in pricing. This year is the year that the OnePlus flagship pricing will be comparative to devices such as Samsung flagships but with it comes some amazing specs.

Speaking to The Verge, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has spelled out a few of the specs but talked about the new screen technology they will be using in the OnePlus 7 Pro – and confirmed that there will indeed BE a OnePlus 7 Pro.

The first time I saw it myself I was stunned…..super-smooth and very crispPete Lau, OnePlus CEO

To start with OnePlus have “invested significantly” (100 million Yuan) in the display tech for the new flagship. They have said that their technology cost is three times that of other flagship displays. Actual specifics of the display were not revealed but we have seen rumours of a 90Hz display and given that only gaming phones such as the Razer Phones (120Hz) and the Asus ROG (90Hz) match of better this you can see how OnePlus can say that the OnePlus 7 Pro will give “a flagship screen experience that is truly best in the world”. A faster refresh rate in the display for animations and gaming will definitely give a faster and smoother experience to the user.

More expensive tech in the display does mean one thing, a more expensive device. Pete suggested to The Verge that the pricing for the new OnePlus 7 Pro will be more in line with flagships from Huawei and Samsung but customers will get not just a new screen technology for a flagship but also 5G. 5G is expected to add pricing to devices in its infancy given the added R&D and other specs such as battery size, that are required to give a decent experience.

OnePlus are apparently not going to be placing too much emphasis on the phone’s 5G capabilities given its scarcity in the world market at this stage. There are plenty of other things for them to focus on including the triple camera setup where it will have:

  1. 48MP Main Lens f/1.7, OIS and EIS
  2. 8MP Telephoto Lens with 3x zoom, f/2.4
  3. 16MP Ultra-Wide Lens, 117° FOV f/2.2

The big emphasis for OnePlus will be on the new display given that they have spent three times their usual pricing on it. Hopefully their customers and fans agree with Pete Lau and think that the new display will justify the new cost. Apparently OnePlus had a great deal of success with their McLaren Edition OnePlus 6T with beefed up specs and pricing so they expect their fans will be happy to purchase a beefed up OnePlus 7 (Pro).

Stay tuned as we wait for the announcement next month which we are hoping to attend to bring hands on with all new OnePlus phones.

Let’s be fair, it’s the Australian consumer laws driving out the competition that are to blame not the manufacturers that are unable to compete on their own terms.

If someone wants to sell a phone with a clearly documented 1 year return to base warranty that should be allowed.

Without local presence, One+ as a brand isn’t worth considering.

Are you concerned about the headaches of warranty claims from overseas vendors who won’t respect the australian consumer laws?

Well if that’s the case my next phone won’t be a oneplus after all.
