This morning at Google I/O the partners for the new Android Q Beta 3 were announced and once again OPPO was in that list. This time it will be the OPPO Reno smartphones that receive the Android Beta. Backing off this OPPO have set the date for the launch of the Reno 5G into the Australian market.

The big news here is that a 5G device is coming, and soon. OPPO have today set the date for the launch of the new OPPO Reno 5G for Australians — May 30. The official media launch will take place on the evening of May 30 and will bring Australia into the 5G age.

Michael Tran, Managing Director at OPPO Australia said that OPPO are proud to bring the Reno 5G to Australian shores:

We have focused heavily on the design and functionality of the smartphone, which packs cutting-edge technology and exceptional photography into a unique, aesthetic design.

We’re also excited for Australia’s launch of the 5G network. OPPO was the first manufacturer to release a commercial 5G device, the Reno 5G, in Switzerland with Swisscom.

Locally we’re continuing to work with carrier partners to bring our 5G handset to Australian shores.

Of course one of the carriers is Telstra with Telstra informing Ausdroid at MWC that an OPPO 5G phone would be one of the first three 5G phones onto their network and this is the only 5G phone OPPO have at the moment. Ausdroid will be in attendance of course and will grab all the details to pass them onto you.

To refresh your memory, the OPPO Reno 5G will come with a Snapdragon 855 with an X50 5G modem, triple rear camera with 10x lossless optical zoom and 60x digital zoom thanks to their periscope lens. Add in the fact that now Android Q Beta 3 is available on the OPPO RENO smartphones and you have a very advanced device.

Andy Wu, Vice President of OPPO, President of OPPO Software Engineering, said of this:

OPPO places great emphasis on perfecting users’ experiences through the integration of hardware and software. We are glad to have Google as an integral and long-standing member of our ecosystem of partners as we deliver extraordinary experiences through innovative OPPO technology.

We hope that this emphasis results in faster updates for users in the future and given OPPO’s poor track record with this anything would be an improvement.

We look forward to testing out the OPPO Reno 5G as well as Telstra’s 5G network. It will be interesting to see how far OPPO have come with their software iteration, hopefully it is enough to satisfy even their hardest critic, me.

Does that mean it’s available to the public on 30 May? If that’s the case, who are the authorised retailers?
