The final security update of 2019 has started rolling out to Pixel phones today. The update included the usual security patches along with various bug fixes.

The phones who have started receiving the update are the original Pixel and Pixel XL, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL and the Pixel 3a and 3a XL. Notoriously absent is the Pixel 4 which may be related to the issues they had last month where the OTA update was dated earlier than the release ROM resulting in many phones not receiving the update — including mine, it still sits on the October patch.

The security vulnerabilities patched range across all levels including a critical security vulnerability in the Framework component which could “enable a remote attacked using a specially crafted message to cause a permanent denial of service.” The severity assessment is based on the effect that the vulnerability may possibly have on an affected device.

This update is the last one that the Pixel and Pixel XL that started this all will receive and we bid them farewell from the Google update list.

If you are impatient, and I used to be before I got one month behind, you can start spamming the update button and download the new update and install it now. The other option is the head over to the Google download page and grab the OTA or full factory image and flash it yourself.

For more information on the updates check out the Pixel Update Bulletin and the Android Security Bulletin.

Installing on my 3XL now. I’m especially looking forward to the “fix for lost bluetooth pairing”. Just lately my phone just forgets my car connection and I have to repair every few days. Hopefully this fix does what it says on the tin.
