Pixels are usually the first phones to receive the security patches to Android and although Google have been dropping the ball a lot lately with that they have today started rolling out the January update to supported Pixel phones.

Some Pixel users have today noticed the January 2020 security update rolling out to their phones and once updated are patched with either the 01/01/2020 or 05/01/2020 security patch level.

The update brings some kernel security updates including one critical Wi-Fi driver update, several high severity Qualcomm component updates. There are also some functional updates included in the rollout which can be seen in the image below:

This time around the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are set to receive the update on the same date as the other Pixel devices although it seems that the Ausdroid Pixel 4 XL review unit is still not going to be updated. It seems that many Pixel 4 XL review units are not being updated and Google have not been able to tell us why. Yes, we could unlock the bootloader and flash the full factory update (the OTA sideload fails – see below) but at this stage we want to see just how long it takes Google to fix it.

Whatever the case, Google Pixel phones, which are not review units, are today receiving the January security update. Hit the check for update button and install the latest Google patch for your Pixel — or you can grab it from here.
