Sonos continues to evolve its Radio product, today announcing a number of new content offerings for its users.
The new offerings are split between Sonos Radio HD, a premium ad-free service that’s yet to launch in Australia, and the standard Sonos Radio product that’s free to stream on Sonos systems everywhere (with ads).
New shows, new artists
Today, Sonos is announcing a number of new shows, some new artist-specific stations along with a number of new artists coming to Radio Hour. For Australia, the most notable new items are those that aren’t related to Sonos Radio HD.
Object of Sound is a new weekly podcast dedicated to music and culture, with new episodes dropping weekly on podcast platforms and on Sonos Radio. The show is dedicated to of “music of the moment”, exploring the stories around the songs of today. Listeners will hear from artists like Jenna Wortham, Kimberly Drew, Sudan Archives, Jeff Tweedy and Open Mike Eagle. Three episodes will be available from January 13 (likely US time), and new episodes will drop on Fridays from January 15. It’ll also be available on Mixcloud and podcast platforms.
Black is Black comes to Sonos Radio on February 4, exploring the black diaspora’s impact on modern music. Its hosted by DJ Lindsey and is a monthly station that will be on Sonos Radio and on Mixcloud.
Unsung is already live on the platform, a new show that speaks to contemporary artists examining the stories behind their unsung heroes – those who never caught the spotlight. The show is hosted by Crack Magazine, an independent music publication from the UK. Episodes will be on Sonos Radio, Mixcloud and podcast platforms.
A host of new artists will join the third season of Radio Hour on Sound System, including Tiwa Savage, Chris Stapleton, A$AP Ferg, Yola, Japanese Breakfast, Sun Ra Arkestra, D’Angelo, FKA twigs, The Chemical Brothers and Björk.
New to Sonos Radio HD
Sonos is adding four new artist-curated stations over the first quarter of 2021, featuring D’Angelo, FKA twigs, Björk and The Chemical Brothers. These same artists are also featured in Radio Hour on the non-HD service, offering a glimpse into the intentions of their stations.
Finally, in February a new station called Blacksmith Radio hosted by industry veteran and artist manager Corey Smyth. Smyth is known for managing particular talents in the industry and will bring exclusive interviews and favourite tracks from his extensive network.
We’re still waiting for a local launch of Sonos Radio HD, but suspect (or hope) it won’t be too far away now.
