Well, it’s April Fools day here in Australia when we expect to see a stream of vaguely plausible tech items. It’s not really a surprise though with COVID-19 still running rampant around the globe that isn’t the case. It’s also nice to see through a memo obtained by Business Insider, Google has recognised the impact and for the second year will not partake in April Fool jokes for 2021.
The memo circulated by Vice President, Marvin Chow said:
As you will remember, last year we made the decision to pause our longstanding Google tradition of celebrating April Fools’ Day, out of respect for all those fighting COVID-19. With much of the world still grappling with serious challenges, we feel we should again pause the jokes for April Fools’ Day this year.
Reading “between the lines” of the memo, this hasn’t outright banned fun and festivities. It has, however, clearly put a line in the sand for major pranks. So perhaps check your Google doodle and keep an eye out for easter eggs in your Google search for the next day or so.
