TCL often deliver surprise packages, not that they exist but they’re as good as they are for the dollars you pay. Today they have added the TCL 20L+ to their mid-range devices at the enticing price of $399 and offering a full feature set. You’d be forgiven for thinking TCL went through the motions of simply “ticking boxes” in the design of this phone, but you’d be wrong…

The display offers everything you’d expect of a device in this price range, with an added bonus. It’s the first to receive Circular Polarisation Certification and Low Blue Light Certifications. What this means in plain English, is the screen has been designed to look good and be easy on your eyes. TCL’s own technology, NXTVISION ensures you’ll get clear images with great colour and contrast on the 6.67″ HD+ screen.

The camera too is focused on user experience with a quad-camera system, delivering excellent image quality and colour reproduction. This extends to night mode implementation in the mid-range and a backlight for low light selfies. You’ll be able to achieve a lot during the day and night thanks to the inclusion of a 5000mAh battery in the TCL 20L+.

Further specs include:

  • Snapdragon 662 Processor and Adreno 610GPU
  • 6GB RAM and 256GB of storage
  • 4G connectivity
  • Android 11 OS

David Vieira, Director of Product Marketing, South East Asia said:

Today’s launch of the TCL 20L+ reinforces our commitment to bring intelligent display technology and a range of other innovative features to beautifully designed and highly affordable smartphones. When combined with the 20 5G and 20 SE, also available from today, we are giving Australian consumers some compelling options for under $500 from a global leader in screen technology

Staying true to form, the TCL 20L+ has a distinct look about it that positions it as a TCL device. The presentation, colour choice of the backing and materials used to fits the mould of previous devices released. From previous reviews, we can attest to these choices making TCL devices somewhat resistant to day to day wear, but it’s always worth putting a case on your phone.

The addition of the TCL 20L+ is complementary to the $299 TCL 20SE and $499 TCL 20 5G. All three devices are available through the usual retail outlets with the TCL 20L+ becoming available today with an RRP of $399.

If you want a low to mid range device with reliable updates, you’ve really only got two options – the Samsung or the Pixel A series. The rest are sub par, and don’t mention an update policy because they don’t have one

You left one company out. HMD Nokia. They are reliable for updates.

What are TCL like for updates, both Android versions and security updates? The phones look good but not if their update mirrors that of Oppo
