PocketCasts is a hugely popular podcast app across the web, iOS and of course Android. After being sold to NPR/Public Media in 2018. Only a couple of years later, after enduring significant losses on PocketCasts, NPR listed it for sale again.
Now picked up by Automattic, the Parent company of WordPress.com, they’re looking at ways to integrate the listening and blogging platforms:
As part of Automattic, Pocket Casts will continue to provide you with the features needed to enjoy your favorite podcasts (or find something new). We will explore building deep integrations with WordPress.com and Pocket Casts, making it easier to distribute and listen to podcasts. We’re thrilled that we can continue to give our users a multitude of ways to tell and engage with stories that matter.
It’s a great thing to see a small Aussie company flourish the way that Shifty Jelly has through PocketCasts. It’s unclear how Automattic intend to monetise the app at this time. What is clear, is that the original owners, Russell and Philip will continue to steer the ship under the new ownership.
