It’s been just over 24 hours since the Nothing Phone (1) launched and there’s plenty to be impressed with. As a starting point, it’s very aggressively priced, starting at just AU$749.00 but, is there a compromise?
Recently, CEO and Co-Founder Carl Pei has tweeted about specs, pricing and user experience noting that the latter is what’s important:
Taking innovation and change as a challenge, the Glyph interface is a very interesting proposition. It will require some setup, but then has simple visual queues for you to know who is calling and what the notifications you’re receiving are.
Unique light patterns made up of 900 LEDs indicate who’s calling and signals app notifications, charging status and more. Simply pair individual contacts to a ringtone, each with a unique Glyph pattern, to never miss what’s truly important.
The internals that “matter” to most users include:
- Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 778G+ chipset
- 120Hz OLED display
- 128GB/8GB, 256GB/8GB and 256GB/12GB storage and memory options
- Adreno 642L GPU
- 50 MP Samsung JN1 sensor/16 MP Sony IMX471 sensor dual camera
- Fast charging (50% in 30 minutes) for the 4,500mAh battery
- Android 12 based with 3 years of OS updates
The options mentioned go on sale from the 21st of July, yes, including Australia. They include the 128GB/8GB for Au$749.00, 256GB/8GB for AU$799.00 and “late summer” 256GB/12GB for AU$849.00.
It looks like a good phone and on paper, the specs are going to be more than enough for a majority of users. The biggest question at the moment is whether the user experience can live up to the hype created.
