It’s now April and the rumours for the Pixel 3 have finally started, this time by Google themselves mentioning the device in a commit in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
The specific mention to the Pixel 3 was made in March, but was only just noticed by the team at XDA-Developers which just shows no-one was really expecting it – ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The commit is talking about the ‘Auto Selection Network UI’ based on the version of the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) presented by the device – in this case HAL V_1_2 only supports the Pixel 3, so…
If you’re interested, the commit in full looks like this:
The HAL sits between the hardware of your device and the Kernel, and is basically what Project Treble was introduced to do which is combine a blob that can be injected in that contains drivers, kernel, basically everything you need to get from hardware to software and initiate a working feature.
It’s early days for Pixel rumours, but it’s started!!
