After a bit of disappointment for Aussie buyers when the last generation of Pixel Fold didn’t land here, Google gave us good news earlier. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is coming to Australia, and I’m genuinely excited by what it brings.

Like the other Pixel devices released this morning, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is powered by the Google Tensor G4 with Titan M2 security coprocessor. It has a 4,650 mAh battery, with “hours of power in minutes of charge” assuming you’re charging from Google’s 45W charger. As you would reasonably expect for a phone that costs $2,699.00 up to $2,899.00 (256GB and 512GB models, respectively), it also supports wireless charging.

The screens

When the device is folded, its dimensions are 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.5 mm and you’re looking at a 6.3-inch Actua display that runs at 20:9 Aspect Ratio, 1080 x 2424 resolution at 422 PPI and dynamic (60 – 120Hz) refresh rate. Like the non-folding Pixel phones, it’s adorned with Corning Gorilla Glaxx Victus 2, and has a peak brightness of 2700 nits.

When you open the fold, you enter a bigger, brighter world of screen space and productivity. The device measures 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.1mm and presents an 8-inch Super Actua display running at an impressive 2076 x 2152 resolution at 373 PPI.

Despite the physical size, the weight of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is only 257 grams. In this, it carries 16GB of RAM and an impressive camera array comprising a 48 MP wide, 10.5 MP ultrawide lens with Macro Focus and a 10.8 MP 5x telephoto lens.

Perhaps one of the more impressive concepts is that, despite the reservations many of us have around the hardware longevity; the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, offers the same 7 years of OS and Security Updates offered to any Pixel branded phone.

It’s coming out of the box with Android 14, which is to be expected. Perhaps the only disappointment (on paper) with the Fold, is that it’s only IPX8 rated; which should survive little spills, but anything more significant and your $2,700+ investment may well be toast.

I’m excited to take one for a test run soon, so leave your questions about the device and daily use experience in the comments.
