ProtonMail has been continually growing in popularity over the past couple of years. As our focus on data privacy continues to grow, this is likely to continue. The high level of security offered by the service makes it hugely attractive. One of the biggest detractors of the service for many users is the lack of desktop install clients. That, however, is set to change in the future with the company confirming work has started on desktop mail clients.
As it stands there is a bridge available to paid users who can then connect their chosen mail client. The suggestion — although unconfirmed from the blog post — from ProtonMail, is that its mail client for Mac, Windows and Linux will be available to all. This will be a huge addition to the features already offered by the iOS and Android apps and their planned improvements:
Also high up on our priority list is a revamp of ProtonMail’s push notification system that will make it possible to remove notifications for already-read messages on our mobile apps. This work is almost complete, and we plan to release this notification system into the mobile apps currently in beta in the next month.
As a user who fairly recently moved email over to ProtonMail for certain communications: ProtonMail is a very good, easy to use option that takes very little change to workflow to adopt. If nothing else, it’s worth signing up to have a backup option available to you.
