Motorola’s follow up to the original Moto X, dubbed the Moto X Gen 2 (although Motorola are just calling it the Moto X again) is due to arrive in retailers soon. Daniel’s been busy and he’s found that Harvey Norman will be stocking the Moto X Gen 2 for the retail price of $699, with stock expected to arrive in the first week of November (so, in a week or two).

The Moto X Gen 2, pictured above, will be available in Black and White initially, and sadly Australian users won’t see the custom designer options available through Moto Maker, which has again been denied to our shores.

Edit:Just a reminder, that back in September when Motorola announced the Moto X Gen 2 for Australia, they did say that only the 16GB model would be coming to Australia.

Maybe buying in US ans shipping to Australia will be easy and cheap .

Oliver Ward

call me crazy, but are these LTE bands on the Moto X oz page even right? “4G LTE (02, 04, 05, 12, 17, 25, 26, 41)” Seems like an error to me.

CuriouserCuriouser

I spoke to Harvey Norman, and it seems they miiiight be getting stock already, but haven’t been given an official time to release it. Fingers crossed it’s coming soon!

Oliver Ward

just dealt with somebody at HN who said no release date had been set yet as there were supply issues..

OzPup

This was going to be my next phone. Might just have to grow longer fingers and get a nex6 instead.

Oliver Ward

seconded

Fiddle Castro

Maybe thirded…except that it won’t be getting the Moto Apps…but I’m sure someone will port them over?

toast

I just join in the Chorus of utter disapointment that only the 16GB model is selling in Aus.
Kogan guys! I hope you can find grey market 32Giggers.

JeniSkunk

And sell those ones at a sane price.

Oliver Ward

wow – ok. $699 for a 16gb model, and one with a small battery. nice. thanks Motorola. way too blow it dudes. i’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the US Pure Edition getting the LTE band upgrade and ordering from overseas. seriously, what a let down….

Fiddle Castro

What networks will the upgrade work on in Oz? Only Telstra?

Daniel Tyson

@disqus_ClToXooJnX:disqus The Software update to the LTE bands will include Bands 3, 5 & 7. This is
Band 03 – 1800MHz
Band 05 – 850MHz
Band 07 – 2600MHz
Telstra, Vodafone and Optus all run a 4G network on the Band 3 (1800MHz) frequency. Vodafone is re-farming their 3G 850MHz network over to 4G so that should be good to go.

BUT…

This is based on the software update coming and to date, Motorola still hasn’t advised when this will happen.

Oliver Ward

fingers crossed it comes as part of the L update. for those that can’t wait though, unlocked XT1097 (AT&T) models can be found on eBay for less than the oz 16gb model – and these already have the band support that the Pure Edition will have after the update.

If you have a quick look at the Harvey Norman Posted price for a variety of phones (Say, the Moto G LTE edition), you’ll find that it is priced $80 over the price of the same phone at various Australian tech websites. For a Samsung Phone (“Galaxy Alpha 4G”) the price hike is close to $140. Might be good to keep in mind that Harvey Norman is selling to a market of (Mostly) non-tech people and can therefore sell phones with a larger markup then usual: Most people make a phone choice based on a price range and whether it… Read more »

So a phone which is basically a Nexus 5+ gets a price which is 75% higher? No matter how good the Motorola software is, that’s just plain price gouging. It seems that the manufacturers have formed some kind of gentlemen’s (ahem) agreement to bump up profit margins to apple-type levels. Maybe this is in realisation that there is no good reason to upgrade at all (we’ve hit a plateau), or maybe they just want to boost bottom lines, but we are seeing a move away from serious price competition at the same time we are seeing a move away from… Read more »

ROFLMAO x 100 @ that price for 16gb. WTF moto?!

Eugene

This is HN you are talking about. Expect to be able to get it for much less. Just haggle.

Anthony

Jeez, at that price you would think it’s made by Apple..! Sticking with the Note 4 by the looks of things..

littlelek

what a joke… seriously what an efen joke… no words to come to mind on how disappointing that news really is, no 32gb phone and at that price thats ridiculous ill be surprised if anyone actually decides to buy it because of that complete joke! What are they really thinking who in their right mind would even think about buying a 16gb phone… after all this wait for “the best phone on the market” seriously one of the biggest let downs ever. how do Motorola expect to break the Australian market by sending us absolutely nothing, might as well not… Read more »

Seriously no 32GB?? #facepalm

kefir

Insane price. Why no 32gb version in Oz?

Harrison Pace

“We will however see the Bamboo Wood Grain version of the new Moto X in Australia alongside the more traditional Black Resin.” – So is the Bamboo model going to cost more? Also WTF $699 – I can get it from the US with Educational discount for almost half . That is insane… I really want this phone and may end up waiting for international shipping…

Caleb Johns

Expensive as f**k, w I’m worried to what the Nexus 6 is gonna cost.

mcored

f**k would be cheaper actually. This is so bulls**t. I hoped Moto X would be somewhat more affordable compared to the Nexus 6 price. Google really spoilt us with Nexus 4 prices but at the same time showed us that price is indeed possible. $550 would be the maximum I would feel like paying.

JeniSkunk

No Moto Maker, no real choice for back case colours, 16GB only, for $699; $200 more than the US…. eff that. No sale.

Ash

is that the price for 32g? it’s too much than what i expected. will nexus 6 be under 800 if they keep that currency exchange?

Bisazz

If you use the moto 360 and nexus 9 as a comparison; Moto 360 US$250 -> AU$330 (32% increase) Nexus 9 16gb US$399 -> AU$479 (20% increase) Nexus 9 32gb US$479 -> AU$589 (22% increase) Moto X US$499 -> AU$699 (40% increase) So if they use the Nexus 9 conversion you’re looking at ~$780 for the 32gb, $840 for the 64gb. If they use the same conversion as the X we’re looking at $910, and $980 respectively. For comparison, using the USD -> AUD exchange, the 32gb would be $740 + gst so ~$810, and 64gb would be $795 +… Read more »

Thanks, that’s great info. Somewhat depressing, but very logical way of breaking it down.
