Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XA1 now listed on Sony Australia website as ‘Coming Soon’

After announcing their updated X series lineup at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Sony has slowly begun launching their phones around the world. The Xperia XA1 recently launched here, but the more desirable XZ Premium and XA1 Ultra appear to be set to launch soon.

The Xperia XA1 Ultra is the slightly better model of the Xperia XA1 offering a larger 6″ display which bumps up to FullHD resolution as well as more battery packed into that larger body. It also could be slightly faster with more RAM packed inside. Both phones offer the same 23MP camera technology from the Xperia Z5 with a wide field of view up to 88 degrees. It’s got the new Sony seamless loop surface design that gives the screen a continuous curve look that effectively eliminates the bezel and offers a nice feel to the hand thanks to that curvature.

On to the more impressive device is the Sony Xperia XZ Premium which caught all our attentions with a powerful platform that includes a Snapdragon 835 SoC. The phone also packs in a 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage (yes, there’s a microSD card slot too) but there are two impressive features that make the Xperia XZ Premium standaout: a 4K resolution display and a camera that can capture 960 frames per second super slow motion at 720p resolution.

There’s a few cheats with the 4k resolution display, like it’s predecessor the Xperia Z5 Ultra the screen only displays 4K resolution when there’s content to make use of it. At all other times, the screen displays at 1080P, but that’s not a bad thing especially when it comes to battery life. Even if it’s just 1080P for the most part, knowing Sony it’s still going to be a rather good looking screen.

The super slow motion capture though is a first of its kind in a mobile phone. It’s utilising something called Motion Eye which is the result of marrying memory with the camera sensor to buffer the incoming images. Sony has already improved on this with 1,000fps @ 1080P sensor, but it’s not due to hit smartphones for some time. The current tech gives you only a single burst at 960fps, that’s about a fifth of a second, or 0.182 seconds to be precise, but when played back it gives you that awesome super-slow-mo video effect you want – and I can’t wait to play with it.

The Xperia XZ Premium went on-sale recently in the UK where it’s sitting fairly reasonably priced at £649.99. The Xperia XA1 Ultra also showed up in the UK where it’s up for pre-order for around the £329 mark. Sony Australia hasn’t announced dates or pricing as yet for either phone, so it’s a matter of wait and see.
