A smartphone launch isn’t really a smartphone launch unless it launches with some other stuff. Generally, a smartphone will launch with some accessories, sometimes they go well, and sometimes they’re poorly thought out.
Last October, Huawei’s Mate 30 Pro launched alongside the Huawei Watch GT – a watch which initially I didn’t much like, but came to appreciate. Featuring classic looks and a cut-down OS that’s light on battery, the Watch GT became my daily smartwatch wear, and even though you can’t buy it in Australia – Huawei are doing their best to get them on wrists, giving them away with the Mate 20 Pro.
It seems we might have some more watches to choose from come the end of this month, though, with Huawei tipped to launch two new watch variants alongside the P30 in Paris.
According to recent reports, the P30 and P30 Pro will be accompanied by not one, but two new smartwatches: the Huawei Watch GT Active and Huawei Watch GT Elegant. For the Active, the report mentions Dark Green and Orange (as seen in the image above) as the two color options that will be available.
The changes don’t seem to be significant from the original Watch GT; the bezels look similar, the buttons on the side look similar, as does the display. The bands are a notable change – from leather/rubber to an active silicone-type band, whereas the Elegant variant will likely be an all leather affair.
Both watches will run Huawei’s own wearable OS (apparently called Light OS), and will debut later this month. With pricing to vary from €229 for the Elegant model to €249 for the Active, the only thing really to be seen is whether these watches will go on sale in Australia, or remain the province of a value-added giveaway.
