A lot of cases make claims about being tough and drop proof, but as far as we can tell Perth based company EFM’s phone cases made of D3O Crystalex are the toughest.

The company claims that they will protect your phone from drops, knocks and shocks from a falling height of up to 6 metres off the ground (military standard drop exceeded by 500%).

The claims seem to be true if you checkout many videos on YouTube of the D30 material being tested in all kinds of scenarios including dropping phones a long way and professional athletes surviving strong impacts.

The special ingredient D3O Crystalex is also used around the world in helmets, gloves and other protective gear by soldiers, professional athletes, industrial workers and motorcyclists.

D3O uses unique patented and proprietary technologies to make rate-sensitive, soft, flexible materials with high shock absorbing properties.

D3O technologies are based on non-Newtonian principles; in its raw form, the material’s molecules flow freely, allowing it to be soft and flexible, but on impact, lock together to dissipate impact energy and reduce transmitted force.

D3O Crystalex impact protection material is completely clear so you can still see the great colours used in modern phone designs. EFM claim that it also has anti-yellowing technology built-in so the case will remain clear for it’s lifetime.

I’ve been using an EFM Cayman case (bought from JB Hi-FI for $59.95) during the last few months on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ and it survived several drops without damaging the phone at all.

The EFM case worked fine with the infinity edge display, wireless charging wasn’t hindered and the case edges are raised around the screen to protect it if it drops face down.

You can buy EFM tough phone cases directly from their website or via retailers like JB Hi-Fi.

Thanks for the tip! I’m in happy-geek ‘phone upgrade pending’ time atm so will be needing a case for my new shiny whatever it is – though I’m actually tempted to indulge my inner early-adopter and go the Samsung Fold if it ever arrives, and the Perth company may struggle to protect that one 😉
