pixel-cost

If there has been one consistent criticism of Google’s latest smartphones it’s been the price, ranging from $1079 – $1419 AUD the Pixel line is definitely one of the most expensive Android phones to ever grace our shores. What if you want the Pixel or Pixel XL but would like to save a few dollars? Thanks to Andrew’s enterprising work, it looks like you can save about 5% off that price tag.

How is this achieved? The process is as simple as it is elegant, currently, Groupon is offering 5.5% off $100, $200 and $500 Woolworths Wish eGift Cards. So you can buy the e-gift cards and then use those to buy JB HiFi gift cards in store, which you then, in turn, use to buy your Pixel phone. You can only claim up to 9 gift cards for each domination, so to get $1000 you would need to buy 5 x $200 vouchers.

How does the math break down? Let’s check it out.

Model RRP  Voucher (cost)  Remaining Total cost  Saving
 Pixel 32GB  $1079  $1000 ($945)  $79  $1024 $55
 Pixel 128GB  $1229  $1200 ($1134)  $29  $1163 $66
 Pixel XL 32GB  $1269  $1200 ($1334)  $69  $1203 $66
 Pixel XL 128GB  $1419  $1400 ($1323)  $19  $1342 $77

We haven’t actually tested that all of this works. However, I have personally converted Woolworths eGift cards into JB HiFi vouchers in the past, to then buy Google Play Gift cards with, so I know the principle is sound. The deal is non-refundable, so if you’re considering this scheme I’d suggest to let your fingers do a little walking and phone ahead first.

Even if you’re not in the market for a Pixel you could still use this plan for anything you can use a Woolworths eGift card on.

Let us know if you try out Andrew’s scheme, and if you do don’t forget to say thanks in the comments.

Alternatively Google could just price the Pixels at a reasonable price in the first place?

If you have a friend who works at WW, get them to buy the JB cards with their staff card, you’ll get another 5% off.

This is very Kool!

Guys, before doing this be careful. I work at a retail store, and we don’t allow gift cards to be purchased with gift cards, unless it’s iTunes or Google play.
So check up first.

I have previously used eGift cards to buy JB HiFi cards, so at least some stores allow this.

Anthonaut

Or use self-serve checkouts? Unless it’s disallowed at a system level.

What a load of conveluted crap to save maybe $50.00 !
