Trailing slightly behind the larger Netflix streaming service, Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media owned streaming service Stan has today announced they now offer a 4K streaming option – if you want to pay a little extra for it.

There’s limited content available initially, though shows like Breaking Bad and the third season of prequel Better Call Saul, and Australian made Stan original series Wolf Creek are available to stream now. More content is due later in the year, and as 4K becomes the new defacto standard, that library will grow.

The 4K streaming service will cost an additional $5 per month on top of the standard Stan $10 per month package. There are some perks though, you can now stream on 4 devices instead of 3, and download offline content to 5 devices instead of 3 – and of course you get 4K quality.

If you’re an existing Stan customer, you can check out the new 4K streaming option for a month at no extra charge. New customers can also try out Stan Premium for free for 30 days.

If you’re looking at using a 4K streaming option, you’ll want to take into account the additional data it will use. This table should show you just how much streaming a show in 4K will add:

Quality setting Data usage per hour
Ultra (UHD) 7 GB per hour
High (HD) 2.89 GB per hour
Medium (SD) 1.13 GB per hour
Low (SD) 0.57 GB per hour

Of course you’ll need an internet connection capable of delivering that much data before you even sign up for 4K, otherwise Stan Standard should do.

If you’re interested in checking out Stan you can head over to their website.
