Foursquare has today announced a new direction for their Swarm app coming in version 5.0 of the app, transitioning the app to be a Lifelog of events.

Co-founder of Foursquare, Dennis Crowley has announced the changes in Swarm on Medium outlining the process by which they’ve come to the change in what Swarm is, into what Swarm will be.

From its beginnings as a ‘Hey, I’m here! Come meet me!’ type social signal, to the social media competition of earning badges and mayorships, Swarm is now more about where you’ve been and marking those little events in your life. As Mr Crowley points out, ‘We’re bookmarking a place. We’re capturing a memory. We’re creating a little nugget of meta-data about our lives to mark a moment in time’ – and this is great.

From version 5.0 onwards, your history will now be more front and centre so you can remember where that cafe you had a real moment in is located, and then share it with others. You’ll also have an easier time keeping up with your friends check-ins as well. It’s a ‘collection of all the places you’ve ever been, neatly organized in a searchable database that can be revisited whenever’.

The update to Swarm is heading out to iOS users today, but will be coming to Android users in ‘about 2 weeks’.
