Okay guys, let’s try to keep the Telstra hate-venting down for a few minutes so we can all understand what is and isn’t going on here. Above is Craig Middleton (Telstra’s Team Group Manager for Media Relations), suggesting that Telstra’s HTC Desires could indeed be updated OTA and is not aware of who “confirmed” that it’s not coming OTA. Considering we got the news from @Telstra, we’re thinking there are mixed messages being spread around the Telstra camp, which is always great news.. Hit the break for more Telstra loving!
In this second tweet, it is revealed that plans have been changed since yesterday and talks are underway as to whether the Desires will be updated OTA or not. No doubt Telstra are weighing up the possible terrabytes of data that will run through their network as they pump out the update to customers on their network.
So to wrap things up, we don’t know what’s going on, you don’t know what’s going on, and best of all Telstra doesn’t know what’s going on. We’re in good hands 🙂

Graham, it’s not the Android team who adds most of the bloatware, it’s the carriers. Most of the junk in a Telstra-branded Android smartphone is put there by Telstra.
And I’m having issues imagining a Microsoft product without bloatware.

I have a few family members with telstra desires (i have a nextg nexus one) why is this taking so long for them to complete? i suspect all carriers want to test the ROM’s on their networks for problems but this seems to hold up ROM updates all around the world and is getting ridiculous with all the lag, there just shouldnt be any custom ROMS and the updates should come from google direct. the way it is now is not helping the fragmentation that is for sure. how does it work with the iphone? do the carriers test those… Read more »

Didn’t have any problem getting my Nexus One OTA over Telstra 3G…mind you, Telstra wasn’t involved in that process so didn’t have the chance to fuck it up royally.
Ahh, your post gives me a lot of confidence.
Things like this makes me want to purchase a phone outright rather than get it through a carrier and have to wait forever and a day for an update.
haha i’m afraid that would not spare you at all mate… people who bought the desire outright in Australia still have a “telstra” branded desire and as such are still at the mercy of these complete tards..

Wouldn’t a lot of updates be done over WiFi anyway? What’s the difference between sending an update ota and other next g customers using the network for email, foxtel browsing etc??
No doubt it could be done over WiFi, but this update could be upto 250MB if it’s anything like the ROMs going around at the moment. And if you have 10,000’s of those going at anyone time, that’s a lot of data if it’s done over 3G.
Why can’t they just send a message with a link to the update to all the customers and tell them to update over WIFI at home or plug in with sync? Whats the big deal?
When updating it says to connect to WiFi if possible.
Lol life the way you write some things buzz… It’s interesting that what essentially has happened is that telstra heard the storm from customers and rethought the release, most likely delaying it further. Telstra… You shouldn’t need such prompts, put your paying customers ease anywhere in the equation and you will be amazed with the results… It ain’t rocket science… Just requires a soul
